COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Freshman Destiny Slocum scored 15 points, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had 14 points and the fifth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team breezed by UMass-Lowell 100-44 in its opener Sunday.
The Terrapins entered the season with the nation's top recruiting class, a group that shined in its debut. Freshman Kaila Charles started alongside Slocum and finished with 11 points in 21 minutes.
"I thought obviously there are many things we can improve on, but I liked that we were able to go in and be really aggressive early and use our speed and our size," head coach Brenda Frese said. "We definitely want to keep building and keep getting better in terms of what we’re doing."
“I thought that at times [the freshmen] showed some nerves, but that overall they showed that they belonged and I think that’s the biggest thing. They’re going to help us in so many areas. They’re so talented. They’re really competitive.”
Brianna Fraser had 14 points and Ieshia Small scored 12 for Maryland, which outrebounded UMass-Lowell 52-30. The Terrapins scored 48 points off 34 UMass-Lowell turnovers.
Maryland, which finished 31-4 last season, flexed its muscle early, going on a 17-3 run to start the game. Walker-Kimbrough led the way with six points over that stretch.
The Terrapins remained dominant at both ends of the court and continued to pull away from the outmatched River Hawks. The Terps had 11 steals over an 11-minute span in the first half.
Maryland got points from 10 players, were 23 of 38 (60.5 percent) from the field and led 57-16 at the break. The Terrapins were just as dominant in the second half, and a jumper by Small increased the margin to 89-32 with 7:45 left in the game.
Nicole Hayner led UMass-Lowell (0-2) with 17 points.
Prior to Sunday's opener, the Terrapins received their championship rings and unveiled a banner for the 2016 Big Ten regular season and tournament championships.
Next, Maryland will host Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. All fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears or stuffed animals for the annual Teddy Bear Toss to support College Park Youth & Family Services.
