ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Maryland women's basketball team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on North Carolina State in the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 5.
This marks the 13th year of the Challenge. The Terrapins are 11-1 all-time in the Challenge, winning their first eight matchups. In the 2018 Challenge, Maryland topped Georgia Tech, 67-54, in College Park behind 23 points from Kaila Charles and 20 from Taylor Mikesell.
The Wolfpack leads the all-time series over the Terrapins, 43-36. Head coach Brenda Frese is 10-5 against NC State. Most recently, they met in the 2018 NCAA Round of 32 with the Wolfpack taking the matchup, 74-60. NC State went 28-6 overall overall last year and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
The Terrapins earned a record of 29-5 last season and won the Big Ten regular season title. They advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the fifth straight year and then went to the NCAA Second Round.
The ACC and Big Ten offices collaborate to determine the Challenge schedule each season. In addition, the official title of the Challenge rotates each year. The 2019 event will be referred to as the Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge and will continue to mirror the official title of the two conferences' Challenge agreements for men's basketball and softball.
The Big Ten and ACC have been among the most competitive conferences on the national women's basketball landscape for many years, with both conferences sending nine schools to postseason play in 2018-19.
The Big Ten had six schools qualify for the NCAA Tournament back in March, as Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State and Rutgers all advanced to the national tournament, with Iowa and Maryland earning top-four national seeds. Three other Big Ten squads (Minnesota, Northwestern and Ohio State) participated in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), with Northwestern advancing to the WNIT championship game for the first time in program history, marking the third consecutive year and 10th time overall that a current Big Ten school has reached the WNIT final.
Game times, as well as television and streaming video coverage, for this year's Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge will be announced at a later date. The complete schedule of home/away matchups for the Challenge can be found below.
