WBB: Terps release non-conference slate

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Big Ten champion Maryland women’s basketball team released its non-conference slate for the 2016-17 season Thursday, which includes contests against Connecticut, Louisville and Arizona State.

The Terrapins will officially open the 2016-17 season on Sunday, Nov. 13 with a matchup against UMass-Lowell. On Wednesday, Nov. 16, the Terps will welcome UMES to the XFINITY Center.

Maryland will host local elementary school students on Friday, Nov. 18 for an 11 a.m. game against Mount St. Mary’s for Field Trip Day. Over 2,000 young Maryland fans from over 20 local elementary schools attended the Terrapins’ Field Trip Day last November.

The Terps will travel to upstate New York for a matchup at Niagara on Sunday, Nov. 20.

Maryland will head to Las Vegas to play in the South Point Shootout over Thanksgiving weekend. The Terrapins will take on 2016 NCAA Tournament participant Arizona State and Washington State. For more on the South Point Shootout, click here.

The Terps will stay on the road the following week, traveling to take on Louisville in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at the KFC Yum! Center on Thursday, Dec. 1.

Next, Maryland will return home to open a three-game home stand. The Terps will host UMBC on Sunday, Dec. 4, Towson on Tuesday, Dec. 6 and Saint Peter’s on Thursday, Dec. 8.

The Terrapins will travel to Baltimore to take on Loyola on Monday, Dec. 12. After the final exam break, they will travel to Pittsburgh to play 2016 NCAA Tournament team Duquesne near senior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough’s hometown of Aliquippa, Pa.

After a short break over the Christmas holiday, the Terrapins will close the non-conference slate by hosting the Connecticut Huskies at the XFINITY Center on Thursday, Dec. 29.

The Terps will host Bluefield State in an exhibition on Wednesday, Nov. 2 and Mary Baldwin in a second exhibition on Sunday, Nov. 6.

This year, Maryland welcomes the No. 1 freshman class in the country, featuring Kaila Charles, Stephanie Jones, Sarah Myers, Destiny Slocum, Jenna Staiti and Blair Watson. All six were McDonald's All-American nominees, with Charles, Slocum and Watson being named All-Americans.

The Terrapins earned an overall record of 31-4 last season and won both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles for the second straight year. Returners Brionna Jones and Walker-Kimbrough earned All-Big Ten First Team honors and WBCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.
