ROSEMONT, IL – The fourth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was picked to win the Big Ten conference title this season by both the league's head coaches and media panel.
The Terrapins have won six Big Ten regular season championships and five tournament championships in their seven seasons in the league. Indiana, which is ranked No. 8 in the AP Preseason poll, was picked to finish second, No. 9 Iowa was picked to finish third and No. 11 Michigan was picked to finish fourth. No. 17 Ohio State was predicted to finish fifth. Both the head coaches and media panel had the same top five predictions.
Juniors Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller were voted to the 10-player Preseason All-Big Ten Team by both groups. Owusu was a unanimous selection by the coaches.
Both Owusu and Miller earned All-Big Ten First Team honors last season and they were named Co-Big Ten Tournament MOPs.
They were Maryland's top two scorers, with Owusu averaging 17.9 points and Miller averaging 17.3 points per game. The Terps led the nation in scoring with 90.8 points per game and No. 1 in the country in assist/turnover ratio (1.69). They helped lead the Terrapins to a record of 26-3 overall and 17-1 in league play.
The Terrapins will play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. Maryland will face three of the other four top-five teams in No. 1 South Carolina, defending national champion No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 NC State, as well as No. 7 Baylor in its non-conference slate.
In its conference slate, Maryland will play three of the other four Big Ten teams in the preseason poll twice in No. 8 Indiana, No. 11 Michigan and No. 17 Ohio State. The Terps will play No. 9 Iowa just once, on the road.
Maryland returns all five starters, all five All-Big Ten honorees and 10 of 11 letterwinners from last year's Big Ten Championship squad. The Terrapins return their top eight leading scorers from last year's squad.
The Terrapins will officially open the new season on Tuesday, Nov. 9 vs. Longwood for their annual Field Trip Day game. The Terps and the Lancers will tip off at 11 a.m. at the XFINITY Center. For tickets, click here.
