WBB: No. 11 Terps breeze past Rutgers

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore guard Kaila Charles scored 22 to lead the No. 11 Maryland women’s basketball team (17-3, 6-1) past Rutgers (17-7, 5-5), 88-60, Thursday evening in the XFINITY Center.

Junior guard Eleanna Christinaki added 20 points while sophomore forward Stephanie Jones had 16. Senior guard Kristen Confroy scored 11 on 4-of-4 shooting.

The Terps set the tone early in the game, outscoring the Scarlet Knights 23-10 in the first quarter. Charles finished the first half with 17 points as Maryland led 41-29.

Jones has 10 points in the third quarter, including the last eight of the period, as the Terrapins closed the quarter with a 62-40 advantage.

Maryland held a 25-13 lead in assists and a 46-26 advantage in rebounding.

The Terps held Rutgers’ leading scorer, Tyler Scaife, to just six points, her lowest output of the season.

Maryland owns the series over Rutgers, 24-11 and won has won all four meetings since joining the league in 2014.

Charles was named Big Ten Player of the Week Monday and USBWA National Player of the Week Tuesday for averaging 24.5 points and shooting 76 percent from the field in the Terps' wins over Ohio State and at Northwestern.

Charles has scored in double figures in 20 of 22 games this season. Confroy has made 194 career threes and moved to No. 2 on Maryland's all-time list in January.

Maryland is ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press poll and No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches poll.

Next, the Terrapins will play at Nebraska (16-6, 7-2) Sunday at 3 p.m. ET at the Huskers' Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.
