COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Kaila Charles of the Maryland women's basketball team was named a Preseason All-American by the Associated Press Thursday. Charles is one of five of the top players in the country to be honored.
Charles is joined on the Preseason All-America Team by Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Chennedy Carter (Texas A&M), Beatrice Mompremier (Miami) and Lauren Cox (Baylor),
Charles is the first Terrapin named to the Preseason All-America Team since Alyssa Thomas in 2013. At the end of last season, Charles earned AP All-America Honorable Mention honors.
Charles was voted Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year last week by the league's head coaches and media panel. She was also named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List as one of the nation's top small forwards.
She earned unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors as a junior last year. Charles is the top returning scorer in the Big Ten with 17.0 points per contest last year. She averaged 6.7 boards per game, good for 15th in the conference and 48.6 percent from the field. She led the Terrapins in scoring in 17 games last year, scoring in double figures in 29 of 24 games.
Charles has started in all 103 games of her career. She currently has 1,528 career points, which is 15th on Maryland's all-time list, and 698 career rebounds.
The Terrapins will start the 2019-20 season ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press preseason poll, released Wednesday. The Terrapins are in the preseason top five for the fifth time under head coach Brenda Frese.
The last time the Terrapins started the season in the top five was 2012-13, when they came in at No. 5. Maryland has been ranked in the top 10 to open 10 of Brenda Frese's 18 seasons, including seven of the last eight years.
The Terrapins will take on six teams in the AP Preseason poll over the course of the season, starting with a matchup with No. 8 South Carolina on Nov. 10 in College Park. The Terps and the Gamecocks will tip off at 3 p.m.
The Terps will officially open the new season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a home matchup against Wagner at 11 a.m. Specific parking instructions for the Nov. 5 game will be posted on umterps.com. Fans are reminded to adhere to all posted parking signage for those lots and all other lots.
