COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Kaila Charles Maryland women's basketball team earned two All-America honors this week. She earned USBWA Third Team honors Tuesday and Associated Press Honorable Mention honors Monday.
Charles is a region finalists for 2019 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America honors. Charles is one of 52 of the top players in the country named a regional finalist. She was named one of five finalists for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame's Cheryl Miller Award, an honor for the nation's top small forward.
This season, Charles led the Terrapins to their fourth Big Ten regular season title in five years. For the second straight season, she led Maryland, and was No. 4 in the Big Ten, in scoring with 17.0 points per game. She was also No. 8 in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (.486) and top 15 in the league in rebounds (228).
Charles was one of just two players in the league unanimously voted to the All-Big Ten First Team and she earned four Big Ten weekly honors this season in helping the Terrapins to an overall record of 29-5 and 15-3 in league play.
Charles averaged 26.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in the Terps' three-game run to the Big Ten championship game. In the final, she scored a career-high 36 points with nine boards and was voted to the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.
She averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 80 percent (28-for-35) from the free throw line in the Terrapins' five postseason games.
