WBB: Frese named Naismith semifinalist

ATLANTA – Head coach Brenda Frese of the Big Ten co-champion and fourth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team is one of 10 semifinalists for the Werner Ladder Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year the Atlanta Tip-Off Club announced Friday.

Frese and her staff helped the Terrapins (27-2) to the best start to the season in program history at 26-1 earlier this year. They welcomed seven newcomers to the rotation with six freshmen and a transfer entering the lineup. As a team, the Terps won a share of their third straight Big Ten regular season title and earned a top-two national ranking.

The Terrapins lead the country in scoring (90.0) and are No. 2 in field goal percentage (.505) and rebounding margin (+16.1). They are third in scoring margin (+26.9) and fourth in assists (20.2).

Frese has earned a record of 455-140 (.765) over her career, 398-110 (.783) in her 15 seasons at Maryland and 92-9 (.911) in the last three seasons. She’s led the Terrapins to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven Sweet Sixteens, six Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 national championship.

Frese has won eight conference titles at Maryland and has led the Terrapins to a record of 55-3 (.948) in Big Ten play since they joined the league in 2014. She’s been named Coach of the Year in three leagues – the MAC, the ACC and the Big Ten – and was the Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 2002.

Maryland will open its Big Ten Tournament run Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET vs. 10th-seeded Minnesota (15-15) at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
