SPRINGFIELD, MA – Graduate student Chloe Bibby of the fourth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team is one of the top 20 small forwards in the country named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List Wednesday.
Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the annual award in its fifth year recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates. Click here for the full list.
Bibby was third on the highest scoring team in the country with 13.2 points per game, plus 6.0 rebounds per contest. Shot 86.8 percent from the free throw line (59-68) and scored in double figures in 21 of 29 games. Bibby helped the Terrapins to a record of 26-3, 17-1 in Big Ten play and the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. The Terps advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
Bibby, who transferred from Mississippi State, is currently nine points from 1,000 in her career with 991. She earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors last season.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2022 Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to 10 and then in late February to just five. In March the five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.
The winner of the 2022 Cheryl Miller Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five.
Maryland is ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll released earlier this month.
The Terrapins, who were also ranked No. 4 in preseason polls from Sports Illustrated and NCAA.com, will play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. Maryland will face three of the other four top-five teams in No. 1 South Carolina, defending national champion No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 NC State, as well as No. 7 Baylor in its non-conference slate.
Maryland returns all five starters, all five All-Big Ten honorees and 10 of 11 letterwinners from last year's Big Ten Championship squad. The Terrapins return their top eight leading scorers from last year's squad, which led the nation in scoring with 90.8 points per game and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen
The Terrapins will officially open the new season on Tuesday, Nov. 9 vs. Longwood for their annual Field Trip Day game. The Terps and the Lancers will tip off at 11 a.m. at the XFINITY Center.
Maryland will host Fairmont State in its first of two exhibitions on Friday, Oct. 29 and Georgian Court in its second exhibition on Thursday, Nov. 4. Both exhibition matches will tip off at 6 p.m. at the XFINITY Center and are free to the public.
