I felt even though we didn't play well in the last two regular season games, it was all coming together both offensively and defensively. We've been really consistent defensively for 6 or 7 weeks and on offense we've been getting better. Just our execution and understanding of our teammates, we feel like we were playing some of our better basketball starting with that five-game win streak. I can't explain what happened in those last two regular season losses. Northwestern we just didn't seem to show up.
We play a lot of fast teams, but they are probably the fastest and the most athletic. They shoot the ball really quickly. I said last night, they are basically the 5th No. 1 seed having won the SEC regular season and tourney championships. We have played good teams all year, we just have to play well tomorrow.
Having guys like Darryl who have NCAA experience is huge. Hurley has done a nice job turning that program around, but those guys were playing in their first NCAA tournaments. Our guys like Morsell, Ayala, Wiggins all had NCAA experience. Galin played in one his freshman year.
Galin is excited. It was funny, we took these group pics on the roof and Alabama was up there at the same time and they were all yelling his name and all came over and gave him a hug. He's excited, it's an opportunity to play against his former teammates and he'll be fired up. We saw Josh Tomaic here and he was hugging our guys in the hallway and it was almost like he's still a part of our team, so I'm happy for him and those guys.
It's difficult to defend a team that shoots the three the way they do. It start with stopping them in transition and defending the ball. But we are going to have to decide who we are going to stop, they are so deep. Again, to me they are the 5th No. 1 seed, they have the talent and have proven they are good all year. We are going to have to choose who we want to guard and hopefully we are right. But we have to rebound, too. They crash the boards like guys who are hungry, so we have to do well there, too.
We hit 7 threes out of Wiggins and Eric. We had three guys in double figures last night, we need at least four tomorrow but yeah, when Wiggins is making shots, it helps everyone. We need more from the bench like Jairus Hamilton, too.
One things that is underrated about Bama is how good they are defensively. For us, we have to be good on defense. We have to get stops. The best teams obviously can do it on both ends, but if you can guard and play defense, you will always have a shot.
We've put a lot on Donta and he's really grown into his role. He's been spectacular defensively. We gave up 18 offensive boards in the 1st, but his toughness in the 2nd half helped limit them to just four in the 2nd half. But we always want more from Scott offensively. We need him aggressive, hunting things and making shots because the more he can do for us offensively, the better.
I was so happy after the win, I was ratcheted up in the tunnel afterwards as you could see. To have our family here and to win a game was great. Was I maybe a little more animated than usual? Sure, but I was so happy for our guys.
