Three Terps Earn Player of the Week Honors
LoCascio, Dunn, Neufeldt Earn Weekly Player Awards
The Maryland men's lacrosse team picked up a bevy of Big Ten Player of the Week Awards after securing an impressive 10-8 victory over then-No. 2 North Carolina in the Pacific Coast Shootout Saturday.
Senior Joe LoCascio earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, junior Matt Dunn was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Matt Neufeldt captured Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. The defensive award is Maryland's fifth of the season.
LoCascio, who had never defeated North Carolina, saved arguably the best game of his career to date for the Tar Heels as he scored a career-high five goals. The senior scored three goals during a punishing 5-0 Maryland run and then tallied the eventual game-winner with five minutes remaining. It is the first individual Big Ten honor for LoCascio.
While Dunn did not light up the stat sheet with just one caused turnover, it was his mere presence that was critical in the Terrapin defense holding high-powered North Carolina eight goals below its season average. Dunn and the Terps frustrated the Tar Heels all night long, including a scoreless stretch that lasted better than 33 minutes. It is the first individual Big Ten honor for Dunn.
Neufeldt continues to emerge as one of the top long stick midfielders in the country, as he collected a career-high nine ground balls and caused a turnover against North Carolina. The freshman solidified many of Charlie Raffa's faceoff wins (15-of-22) from the wing. It marks the second individual Big Ten honor for Neufeldt.
The 3rd-ranked Terps have a quick turnaround as they travel to Moon Township, Pa., for a matchup with Robert Morris Tuesday at 4 p.m.
