Ohio State Defeats Maryland in Big Ten Semis

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Bryan Cole posted four points on a goal and three assists, but the No. 6 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team was unable to stymie a fourth-quarter rally by No. 14 Ohio State as it fell, 9-6, in the inaugural Big Ten Tournament semifinals Thursday night.
Maryland finished its first regular season in the Big Ten with a 12-3 overall mark, while Ohio State improves to 11-5 on the year. The Terps will discover their postseason fate Sunday night as ESPNU hosts the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Selection Show at 9 pm.
Played at a methodical pace throughout, the game began with each team getting on the board with an extra-man goal in the first. After Jesse King gave OSU a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game, sophomore Matt Rambo scored his first of the game off of a feed from Cole to tie the game at the 10:43 mark.
The Terrapins took their first lead just over a minute later when senior Joe LoCascio scored his first of the game off another Cole assist with 9:19 left in the first.
Neither team would find the net for the next 20:11, but it was LoCascio who ended the scoring drought with an unassisted tally at 4:02 of the second quarter.
The Terps looked to take a two-goal lead into halftime, but Ohio State’s Turner Evans scored unassisted with just 38 seconds left in the half to cut Maryland’s lead to 3-2 going into the break.
Each team found the net twice in the third quarter. After Ohio State cut the lead back to one on a goal from Carter Brown at the 7:53 mark, Maryland built its largest lead of the game, 5-3, on back-to-back goals by Rambo and senior Jay Carlson.
But it was Ohio State that claimed momentum going into the fourth quarter when David Planning scored with just one second left in the third. That goal started a 6-0 Ohio State run that gave the Buckeyes a 9-5 lead and put the game out of reach with just 1:33 left in the game.
Maryland got on the board again with its final tally with 25 seconds left when Cole scored off an assist from sophomore Dylan Maltz.
