COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Mark Turgeon announced Friday that Schnider Herard will join the University of Maryland men’s basketball program and will be eligible to play in January of 2019.
Herard, a 6-10, 260-pound center, comes to Maryland after averaging 5.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as a freshman as Mississippi State. Herard will have two years of eligibility remaining.
“We are excited to welcome Schnider to our Maryland Basketball family,” Turgeon said. “Schnider is an experienced and unselfish player who will do what it takes to put his team in the best position to be successful. Defensively, he’s a strong, physical presence who is very a good rebounder and rim protector. On the offensive end, he can score in the post and set solid screens to open up offensive opportunities. Overall, Schnider will be a great fit and we will rely on his leadership both on and off the court.”
The Port-au-Prince, Haiti native appeared in all 32 games for the Bulldogs his freshmen season, making 19 starts. He recorded two double-doubles, and finished with double figure rebounds in three games. Herard appeared in 11 games for the Bulldogs in the 2017-18 season.
Herard scored 1,000 points during his high school career at Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas. He was rated as the No. 37 recruit by Rivals in the class of 2016 and the No. 7 center. He led his team to three 5A state championships his sophomore, junior and senior years. In addition, he earned 5A state championship MVP honors as a sophomore and senior.
