COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University men’s lacrosse teams have collaborated to announce the unveiling of “The Rivalry Trophy.”
Serving as a nod to one of the state of Maryland’s most iconic images, the Maryland blue crab, the trophy was made using reclaimed wood from Baltimore, Md., and crafted by Sandtown Millworks. It weighs 25 pounds and measures 32 inches wide and 22 inches tall.
“Our coaching staff and players consider it a great honor and privilege to compete in a rivalry that is much greater than ourselves,” said Maryland head coach John Tillman. “We are thrilled to add even more meaning to the Maryland-Johns Hopkins rivalry with the addition of the trophy.”
"It is not lost on our current staff and players or those who came before us that representing Johns Hopkins in the greatest rivalry in college lacrosse is an honor," Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala noted. "After more than 100 all-time meetings, it's not easy to add something to a rivalry that is already so intense and important to so many, yet the addition of the "The Rivalry Trophy" does just that. We look forward to the addition of this new and exciting chapter in the storied history of Hopkins-Maryland."
The trophy will be awarded annually to the winning team following the regular season contest.
Long celebrated as the greatest rivalry in college lacrosse with more than 100 meetings in its history, 2015 marks the first year that Maryland and Johns Hopkins are scheduled to meet as conference foes. The pair collide in their Big Ten Conference regular season finale Saturday, April 25, at 8 pm at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
This season’s matchup has increased significance, as both Maryland and Johns Hopkins will be playing for Big Ten Regular season titles. The Terps can claim the title outright with a win, while the Blue Jays have the opportunity to share the title with Maryland and possibly Ohio State.
Much like their rivalry on the field, Maryland and Johns Hopkins have differing opinions on the official all-time record. The Terrapins recognize their program’s first season as 1924, and maintain the Blue Jays hold a 63-40-1 advantage in the series. Johns Hopkins notes the first official meeting as 1895, however, and believes it holds a 70-40-1 series lead.
Maryland and Johns Hopkins are two of the most celebrated programs in the history of men’s lacrosse, combining for 11 NCAA Championships and 55 overall national titles. The teams have met 13 times in the 44-year history of the NCAA Tournament, including three championship game matchups.
