Terps Fall to Hopkins in “The Rivalry”
Bryan Cole tallies career-high five points
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite a pair of five-point efforts from Joe LoCascio and Bryan Cole, the No. 2 Maryland men’s lacrosse team fell to Johns Hopkins, 15-12, in “The Rivalry” Saturday evening at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. An announced 9,343 witnessed the action despite pouring rain throughout the game.
Maryland (12-2, 4-1 B1G) and Johns Hopkins (7-6, 4-1 B1G) share the inaugural Big Ten regular season title. The Terps are the 2-seed in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament and will face Ohio State in College Park, Md., on Thursday night. Semifinal round schedule is to be determined.
The Terrapins jumped out to a decisive 4-1 lead early in the first quarter on two goals each by Matt Rambo and Jay Carlson, but John Crawley and Joel Tinney each scored for the Blue Jays to pull within one, 4-3.
LoCascio twice fired rockets to give Maryland a 6-4 advantage, but Hopkins had a rebuttal on both occasions and eventually tied the game, 6-6. It would be a familiar story as Maryland jumped out to four more one-goal leads, with the Blue Jays tying the game on every occasion.
The game turned in the fourth quarter when Ryan Brown scored 33 seconds into the frame, and then scored again 10 seconds later to give Hopkins an 11-10 lead.
The Blue Jays then extended their lead to 15-10 with four more unanswered goals. Cole and Henry West scored a pair of goals late to close the scoring for Maryland.
Senior Charlie Raffa went 12-for-20 at the faceoff X, and moved into a tie for third all-time in ground balls (263) at Maryland with Jack Francis (1980-83).
