Spring practice No. 8 was today in College Park as the Terps get ready to scrimmage on Saturday. Again, nothing ground-breaking to report from the 30 minutes we get to observe but was interested to see how the offense looked today after Locksley said they looked sloppy on Tuesday.
Here are a few notes from today's practice:
Here are a few notes from today's practice:
- The defense still looks to be ahead of the offense at this point. Locksley said on Tuesday that he was disappointed in how the offense looked and pleased with how the defense has stepped up. The two obviously go hand and hand, but to the offense's defense (no pun intended), major additions to the quarterback, wide receiver, and tight end rooms have yet to join the team and the offensive line has been hit with some injuries this spring so a lack of chemistry should perhaps be expected. Still some dropped balls by WRs and poor passes from QBs today as the offense plays catchup.
- No ex players at practice today, but Mike Francis, A.J. Francis' father, was out watching practice with all of the local coaches in town for the coaches clinic in College Park that started today.
- Speaking of coaches here today for the start of the clinic, we noticed coaches from the staffs of C.H. Flower, Potomac, Randallstown, South River, Damascus, High Point.
- Still plenty of yellow jerseys out there today, which might be a good thing at this point considering we've already seen two season-ending injuries in the first two weeks. Probably didn't get every name here but the ones we noticed sporting yellow today were Cam Spence, Darryl Turner, Jake Funk, Isaiah Davis, Nnamdi Egbuaba, Marcus Minor, Lorenzo Harrison, Rayshad Lewis, who has a heavily wrapped wrist. No word on the extent of his injury though.
- After safety Antwaine Richardson went down last, it opened up many questions as to whom would step up to play on the backend of the defense with the first team. My money is still on incoming freshman Nick Cross once he gets on campus and with the team, but from the small portion of practice we saw today it appears local product Raymond Boone might be getting first crack with the starters after Richardson's injury.
- The biggest recruit on campus for practice today was Potomac 2020 three-star WR/DB Corey Dyches. We will try to get a hold of Dyches after his visit to see how it went.
