Second spring practice for the Terps today as the Michael Locksley (and yes, from what I've heard recently he prefers Michael over Mike) era gets underway in College Park.
Again, we're only privy to about 30 minutes of practice so not a ton of conclusions can be drawn, but here are a few notes:
Again, we're only privy to about 30 minutes of practice so not a ton of conclusions can be drawn, but here are a few notes:
- Former Virginia Tech WR Sean Savoy is now officially listed on the Terps' roster as a DB. Locksley mentioned on Tuesday that Savoy switching sides of the ball was part of the plan all along when he decided to transfer to Maryland.
- Didn't notice this on Tuesday but looked today when I saw him practicing with a different position. Former WR and fifth-year senior Michael Cornwell is now listed on the roster as a TE and it appears that will be his position moving forward.
- Watched several of Maryland's WRs make nice really nice catches in stride on deep balls during throwing drills with the QBs. Dontay Demus, Tahj Capehart, MJ Jarrell and DJ Turner all made highlight-reel grabs while I was watching. To no surprise, Pigrome throws the nicest deep ball of any of the signal callers that are practicing this spring.
- Seemed to be some mixing and matching with the first, second and third teams during some of the drilling we saw. Bortenschlager was getting reps with the "first team," Pigrome with the "second team" and DeSue with the "third team." DeSue was getting an ear full at one point from Locksley, who was NOT happy with the sophomore QB.
- Although Derwin Gray kinda spilled the beans at Pro Day yesterday and let us know that he believes Jaelyn Duncan is first in line to take over a vacant offensive tackle position, there were some different combinations used for the offensive front today. Pretty sure I saw Ellis McKennie playing tackle with the first team at one point.
- Finally, in terms of recruiting, Green Run (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a pair of its best players on hand to observe practice, including 2020 three-star WR Lakeem Rudolph and 2022 CB Tayon Holloway, who already holds a Virginia Tech offer despite being so young. Fairmount Heights High School (Capitol Heights, Md.) also had a ton of kids here today. Looked like the majority of their team.
