Many of you participated in a survey I posted here two months ago. I came across a journal article about rivalry in the corporate world. They studied college basketball rivalries and found that in games that were rated high on the rivalry scale defenses played with greater effort even though offensive skill remained the same. Rivalries were great for increasing effort but would result in both sides with diminished offensive performance. They found that free throw shooting remained the same. Therefore in the corporate world rivalry may be great for increasing effort, but detrimental for tasks that may need precision.

This study was done by Kilduff, Elfenein and Staw in 2010. I was able to contact them and obtain the rivalry matrix they surveyed the entire NCAA. I re-ran this survey with some changes and added football. I believe that asymmetrical (one way) rivalries do exist. Just as the researchers and it only takes one side to believe there is a rivalry to increase their effort in performance. Some people think you bring the same effort at each game and most anyone who has played sports know that simply isn't true.

I am still researching the subject and it is going to take some time and there are so many things I can do with the data. I am collaborating with Kilduff at NYU and we'll see where this takes us. I am researching this for sports management and his research was for business applications. I do intend to run this in 5-10 years to see where Maryland's fans stand with the Big Ten rivals at that point.

I have already shared this with the UMD Athletic Department, but I wanted to thank everyone for participating in the survey and I wanted to show the preliminary results here because so many asked to see them.

P.S. I am also running a survey on alcohol consumption at sporting events, if you can take that survey it would be a great help. The link is below:

#1 When we left the ACC, Maryland had played Duke more than any other ACC school. More than UNC. We had played 82 games where as UNC had played 80. Apparently Duke rated us right behind UNC in terms of rivalry. So regardless of what the fans say when we show up, that's how they felt when they didn't know Maryland was listening

#2 Surprised jus the same at how UVA felt about us, I do hope we can keep rivalries going in basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse etc. Seems to be at least some feelings there both ways.

#3 Well Penn State didn't take that long to earn Maryland's ire.
