I'm down here in Baltimore for the Five-Star Challenge tomorrow and I just caught up with Clairton, Pa. 2017 Ath. Lamont Wade and his father for a good 20 minutes.
The main thing that came out of that is that the two of them are planning to make a trip down to College Park sometime before the end of June. He and his teammates will be participating in Penn State's 7-on-7 tournament on June 20, so it won't be that weekend, but I think there's a good chance that they could make June 27 work. That's kind of the date they're leaning towards right now, but it could also be next weekend, so I'll check in with his father this upcoming week to see if they're set anything up.
Wade was supposed to visit Maryland for its spring game back in April, but they had a death in the family and couldn't make it that weekend. Wade has been speaking with Greg Studrawa roughly once every two weeks over the phone, plus a few Twitter conversations every few days.
The staff is mainly recruiting him as an athlete, like most schools, but they've actually mentioned running back a few times, so that's something to watch. He's strong and shifty, so that doesn't surprise me, especially after the two RB departures recently. Lamont did a little bit of everything for Clairton last season. He's also looking to visit Virginia Tech before the end of June, so I could see them visiting both UMD and Va. Tech on back-to-back days, so I'll keep a close eye on them these next few days. The only other visit they've taken recently was to Ohio State, which was last weekend, May 30. He doesn't really have any favorites at the moment, but I do get the vibe that the Buckeyes will be one of his top three schools come decision time.
I also asked about 2016 WR Aaron Mathews, but they didn't know much about where he stands right now. Mathews rarely speaks with the media, so he's been tough to get a read on, but I know Aaron did make it down to Maryland for the spring game.
I'll also try to catch up with both OL Terrance Davis and Richard Merritt when they arrive. As of 20 minutes ago, they still weren't here. Obviously, they'll both just be driving up, so they may not come until later tonight.
If you guys are looking for me to ask any specific questions for those two, let me know.
