Rambo Nets Game-Winner in Victory over Rutgers

Matt Rambo tallies career-high three assist

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In front of a large contingency of family and friends, sophomore Matt Rambo scored the game-winning goal with 13 seconds remaining to give the No. 3 Maryland men's lacrosse team a 9-8 win over Rutgers Sunday night. Rambo tallied all six of his points in the second half, including a career-high three assists which came during the third quarter.

Tied at eight goals apiece with 49 seconds to play, Rambo took matters into his own hands by scoring the game-winner past goalie Kris Alleyne to secure Maryland's 10th consecutive win. It is the longest win streak for the Terps since they won 12 straight in 1987.

After hitting the post multiple times in the opening minutes, the Terps began the game with a Dylan Maltz goal that gave Maryland a 1-0 lead. The Scarlet Knights came out firing in the second quarter, however, stringing together three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 advantage. The Terps' Bryan Cole pulled Maryland within one, 3-2, on a feed from Joe LoCascio, but Rutgers' faceoff specialist Joe Nardella scored just five seconds later to give the home team a 4-2 halftime lead.

Following a Rutgers goal 40 seconds into the half, Rambo led the Terps on a prolific comeback by tallying a goal and three assists in the third quarter. Rambo started the charge with a feed to Henry West. Rutgers answered to retake a 6-3 lead, but Jay Carlson, Rambo and LoCascio fired three straight goals in a span of 1:43 to tie the game. West then finished the five-goal frame with an unassisted tally to give Maryland a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth.

Rambo continued the scoring spree with goal 3:56 into the fourth. The Scarlet Knights responded with two goals to tie the game with 3:34 remaining in the game, setting up Rambo's eventual game-winner with 13 seconds left. After going 0-for-4 at the faceoff X in the first half, Jon Garino went 9-for-13 in the second frame to give Maryland a boost on the offensive end.

Maryland next travels to Columbus, Ohio, Saturday to take on Ohio State at 11 a.m. in a matchup between the undefeated (3-0) Big Ten foes. The game will air live on Big Ten Network, prior to Ohio State's spring football game.
