COLLEGE PARK, MD -- After averaging 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds, Maryland'sDerik Queen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. This marks the third time this season that Queen has been named the conference's freshman of the week.
Queen helped lead Maryland to a pair of road wins at No. 17 Illinois (91-70) and Indiana (79-78). Both of the wins marked the first true road victories of the year for the Terps. Queen also added seven assists, four steals, and two blocks over the week, while shooting 13-21 from the field and 6-9 from the free-throw line.
Queen got the week started with 25 points and six rebounds at Illinois. Queen added four assists and a pair of blocks. Queen's 25-point outing against Illinois was his seventh 20-point game of the season. Queen followed it up with a seven-point and 11 rebound game against Indiana. Queen filled up the stat sheet in that game as well, picking up three assists and two blocks.
Queen is the first Terp to earn three Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors since Jalen Smith in 2018-19. Queen earned his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after being named the MVP of the Saatva Empire Classic in a win over Villanova. His second came after two double-double performances to start Big Ten play against Ohio State and Purdue.
