Contract length, salary and more details from new Maryland offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton's contract

Details on new Maryland offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton's contract.

Pep Hamilton signed a three-year agreement to be Maryland football's offensive coordinator, according to a legal agreement obtained by Inside Maryland Sports. Hamilton, hired by head coach Mike Locksley two weeks ago, will earn $1 million in 2025, $1.25 million in 2026 and $1.5 million in 2027 assuming he sticks around for the length of his contract.

Based on last season's salaries, that first-year pay would make him the 10th-highest offensive coordinator in the Big Ten.

"Pep is one of the most well-respected offensive minds in our business and his addition to the Maryland football family is significant," Locksley said in a press release when announcing the hire. "Pep has consistently developed players over his career, succeeding at all levels and always bringing out the best in everyone he works with. Additionally, Pep and I share many of the same core values and offensive philosophies, which will allow for a smooth transition."

Via our original report on Hamilton's hiring:

Since 2003, Hamilton has held offensive roles with seven different NFL teams. He began his NFL coaching career with the Jets and later served as an offensive coordinator for the Colts (2013-15) and Texans (2022). He was also the assistant head coach for the Browns in 2016.

Hamilton was the quarterbacks coach for Chargers star Justin Herbert during his rookie season in 2020, when he completed 66.6% of his passes for 4,336 yards with 31 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.

Hamilton was also a final candidate for the Maryland job before Locksley was hired in 2018. The two collaborated on a symposium for minority quarterback coaches and offensive coordinators at Morehouse College that year, which eventually led to Locksley founding the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches (NCMFC).

Hamilton has been also linked to Maryland when the offensive coordinator job was open in 2023.

Hamilton's deal has the usual bonuses if Maryland were to make the Big Ten championship or the College Football Playoff. He's also eligible to earn longevity bonuses of $250,000 if still employed on Feb 16, 2026 and another $250,000 if he's still employed on Feb 16, 2027. There's no buyout amount, so if terminated without cause, Maryland would have to pay his remaining guaranteed salary minus new employment income. If he resigns before the 2026 regular season ends, he owes Maryland $100,000 unless leaving for a head coach position.
