COLLEGE PARK, MD -- University of Maryland punter Anthony Pecorella and defensive back Tarheeb Still were both selected for preseason watch lists on Thursday. Pecorella was added to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and Still was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List.
Pecorella is one of 115 college football players recognized on the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, which is College Football's Premier Award for Community Service. The award goes to college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
One of the leaders of the Maryland football team, Pecorella is heavily involved in both the Terps mental health and community service efforts. The senior punter has been an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness, specifically amongst student-athletes. Pecorella started an Instagram account called Healthy Minds, where he encourages athletes to share their battles with mental health.
Pecorella is also very involved with Team IMPACT, a foundation that connects young children with athletic teams. The Malverne, NY native is a fellow for the University of Maryland Chapter of Team Impact and is involved with the football program's family member, Cal Taylor.
Maryland's third ranked all-time leader in punting average (42.4 yards per punt), Pecorella was a recipient of the 2022 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award and is a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
This is the second year in a row Maryland has had a Wuerffel Trophy Watch List member as Brian Cobbs was on the watch list last season.
An up-to-date list of nominees can be found at www.wuerffeltrophy.org beginning on August 1. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 1, and finalists will be announced on November 22. The formal announcement of the 2022 recipient is scheduled to be made on December 8, and the presentation of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on February 24, 2023.
Still was recognized as one of the nation's most versatile players as he was named to the 2022 Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse.
The Louisville Sports Commission is now in its 13th year operating the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse. The Award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football (www.paulhornungaward.com). 52 players made the cut for this year's watch list.
Still enters his junior season as a Terp as a versatile player that plays cornerback, serves as the team's punt returner, and is on the field goal unit to block kicks. The Sicklerville, NJ native has started all 17 games he has played in over two seasons and has totaled 75 tackles (58 solo), 19 pass breakups, three tackles for loss and two sacks.
Still led the nation in pass breakups per game in 2020 en route to being named a Freshman All-American by The Athletic. Last season, Still stood Second on the team and sixth in the Big Ten with 11 pass breakups.
As a punt returner, Still broke the school record for longest punt return in program history in last year's New Era Pinstripe Bowl, opening the scoring with a 92-yard touchdown to the house. In total, Still returned 21 punts for 172 yards. The cornerback was one of only 52 players in the FBS to return a punt for a touchdown last season.
The 2022 Watch List was compiled by a panel of college football experts based on a combination of 2021 statistics, career performance, SID recommendations and expectations heading into the 2022 season. In addition to the Watch List, the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll will recognize players whose performances during the regular season meet the Award's criteria. Players from both the Watch List and the Honor Roll will be eligible to win the Award.
This is the second year in a row Maryland has had a Paul Hornung Award Watch List member as current redshirt senior Jeshaun Jones was on the watch list last season.
Pecorella, Still and the Terps open their 2022 campaign on September 3 at home against Buffalo. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
