COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore running back Anthony McFarland Jr. was named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award for the National Player of the Year and senior defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr. earned a spot on the preseason Bednarik Award Watch List for the National Defensive Player of the Year.
McFarland is the third Terp in the last six years to be recognized on the Maxwell Award Watch List, joining two-time selection Stefon Diggs (2013 & 2014) and Ty Johnson (2018). Brooks is the first Terp to be selected to the Bednarik Award Watch List since Jermaine Carter in 2017.
McFarland had a break out year in 2018, rushing for a Maryland freshman record 1,034 yards while averaging 7.9 yards per carry. He was selected as a Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American and named Second Team All-Big Ten.
A Hyattsville native, McFarland also set Maryland freshman records for most rushing yards in a game (298 vs. Ohio State) and most 100-yard rushing games (4). His 1,034 rushing yards ranks as the ninth most in a season in program history and his yards per carry mark ranked fifth in the nation.
Brooks led the Terps with 9.5 tackles for loss en route to being named Second Team All-Big Ten during his junior campaign in 2018. A dynamic playmaker that started all 12 games last year, Brooks ranked third on the team with 68 tackles.
A Lanham native, Brooks was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after leading the team with 11 tackles and snagging the game-sealing interception in Maryland's 2018 season-opening win over Texas.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced Oct. 29, 2019, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled Nov. 25, 2019. The winners of the 2019 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12, 2019.
