Came across this article earlier about college basketball 'kill shots,' which are basically 10-0 or better runs that teams go on. This guy looks at the number of 10-0 runs a team goes on in a season as well as the number of 10-0 runs a team allows their opponents to go on throughout the season. I was a bit surprised to see that Maryland was one of the top 8 teams in the country in adjusted kill shot margin, along with Alabama, Houston, UCLA, UConn, Gonzaga, Tennessee and Oral Roberts. Six of those teams are in the top 10 in basically all rankings. He also found that of the last 4 national champs, all had adjusted kill shot per game of .65 or higher and adjusted kill shots against per game of .30 or lower. Maryland is one of just 7 teams that fits that criteria.
I personally find this stuff fascinating and I've found a similar trend for picking national champs myself, as you can go back, I believe almost 25 years now and every national champ except one has had adjusted offensive AND defensive efficiency of 30 or higher. Most are ranked inside the top 10 of at least one and the top 20 of the other. But that eliminates about 90% of the field before the tournament even starts. For those wondering, when the Terps won it all in 02, they were 4th in offense and 7th in defense. The lone exception was that Kevin Ollie UConn team in 2014. They were 39th in offense and 10th in defense.
This is an excellent read for anyone interested. LINK
