In what was a mundane practice with little contact because the 'thud' concept was used, the good news came a afterwards when head coach Randy Edsall said that Caleb Rowe and several others were approved for a Medical Red-Shirt season. The final list will come shortly from the football office. Edsall said thought that there were six, total, that got the extra year but he is going to clarify it shortly.
So far this spring, the play has been 'rollercoaster-like' as the quarterbacks have struggled at times and the defense installing the new 4-3 scheme. Both sides of the ball have their moments, but, today, it was clearly the receivers that, literally, dropped the ball. Marcus Leak, Will Ulmer, PJ Gallo, Derrick Hayward and DeAndre Lane all had chances to make the routine catch and failed to do so a few times. But, on the other hand, there were highlights within the group. Levern Jacobs hauled in a 45-yarder and Lane bounced back with a 65-yarder and a 25-yard catch. The quarterbacks seemed to be on time with their passes they just didn't get caught.
On the other side, defensive backs AJ Hendy had two interceptions, one from Perry Hills and another from Shane Cockerille. Sean Davis had a pick but the play of the day could have been Will Likely laying out to break up a pass intended for Marcus Leak.
Edsall commented more on Saturday's scrimmage after watching the tape. He praised the defense for playing and tackling with good technique. In contrast, he said that the offense, especially the quarterbacks didn't play with much consistency.
Those who stood out on the defense were Abner Logan, who Edsall was concerned with a few days ago. He said that Logan played with much more intensity and with a sense of urgency. He really likes how Hendy and Davis are playing this spring, especially in the spring. At the linebacker spot, Jalen Brooks, who moved over from the inside to the outside and Cavon Walker have been showing a lot of progress. Despite Walker being a little rusty after coming back from injury, Edsall likes what he sees in the true 'run stopper'.
Offensive Coordinator Mike Locksley said on Saturday that the offensive line was his biggest surprise, so far. Today, Edsall praised the play of Ryan Doyle and Andrew Zeller. He also liked how Brandon Ross played, to date and he also said that Derrick Hayward is getting better. In terms of the experimental move upfront with Derwin Gray and Michael Dunn at left tackle, Edsall says that Gray just needs more reps. He is very comfortable with Dunn at the right or the left.
We got to zero in on the freshman punters, Nicholas Prichard and Lee Shrader. Shrader nailed two 50-plus yard punts and Prichard hit a 45-yarder but shanked one and had two other line drive punts. Edsall said that he has had no real evaluation, yet, with them but plans on ramping that up in the next couple of practices. He also said that there will be no winner or loser this spring and that the starter will likely not be named until game-week.
Visitors at practice included a few recruits including Cam Spence. A former Terp coach from the Bobby Ross and Joe Krivak era, Greg Williams, was on the sidelines. Ironically Williams lives near Edsall's home town in Pennsylvania. There were high school coaches watching from Imotep and Yorktown, as well.
The only news on the injury from is Albert Reid has a sore knee but Edsall thinks it's no big deal at this point.
