HIGH POINT, N.C. – Senior Tim Rotanz and sophomore Jared Bernhardt each posted six points and senior Mike Adler caused six turnovers as No. 2 Maryland defeated High Point, 16-14, in its first road test of the season Saturday.
Rotanz’ six points were a career-high for the fifth-year veteran, while Adler’s six caused turnovers were the most for a Maryland defenseman since Brian Farrell had six against Georgetown on Feb. 27, 2010.
Bernhardt’s six points came on the heels of a seven-point performance Tuesday against Marist, while Connor Kelly’s five points on the day extended his team-leading season points total to 15 through three games.
The Terps (3-0) started the game fast, scoring a season-high six first quarter goals to open up a 6-2 advantage. Bernhardt had a pair of goals during the stretch.
After High Point (0-3) opened the second quarter with a goal, the Terps scored four straight to open up a 10-3 advantage.
The game was far from in hand, however, as High Point methodically clawed its way back into the game to draw within one, 14-13.
With the game hanging in the balance late, the Terps’ senior veterans stepped up. Rotanz and Kelly scored the final two goals of the game to preserve the victory.
Maryland has now won 10 consecutive games dating back to 2016.
The Terps return to action Wednesday at 5 pm against Penn when they welcome the Quakers to Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
