PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Maryland outscored Rutgers 10-3 in the second half, propelled by a career-high six points from Anthony DeMaio as the Terrapins (10-2, 2-1) completed a comeback win over the Scarlet Knights (6-6, 1-2), 16-13 Sunday evening. The third-ranked Terps were aided by a 12-of-16 edge from the faceoff x in the third and fourth quarters, as Jared Bernhardt, Bubba Fairman and Louis Dubick all added hat tricks to help clinch the three-goal win.
Danny Dolan made nine saves in the cage in the game, including five in the first quarter as the Terps withstood an early barrage at Highpoint.com Stadium.
Faced with a five-goal hole at the 6:08 mark in the second quarter after an Owen Mead score, the Terps rallied for two pivotal late goals to make it a three goal game at the half. Dubick would tally his first of three with 5:06 to go, before Fairman came through in the closing seconds with a blast from up top.
Maryland game out firing in the third quarter, scoring the period’s first three goals to tie the game at nine at the 11:19 mark. Rutgers would respond with an Adam Charalambides strike at 9:19 before consecutive goals from Bernhardt and freshman Kyle Long gave the Terps their first lead as the fourth quarter began.
Rutgers punched back, bagging the game’s next two goals to regain and one-goal lead with 11:29 on the clock. But Maryland offense kicked into gear, rattling off a five-goal run that included two spectacular dives from Dubick and Bernhardt to take their biggest lead 16-12 with 4:29 remaining.
The Scarlet Knights would manage one more in the final four minutes, but it was too little too late as Maryland held on for its 12th straight win in the series.
The Terps will return to action next Saturday, April 20 when the team faces Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The game will faceoff at 1:00 pm.
