COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Jared Bernhardt notched his sixth hat trick of the season and led the team with five points, but Maryland (8-2, 0-1 B1G) couldn’t overcome a seven-goal first quarter deficit from No. 1 Penn State (8-1, 1-0 B1G) as the Nittany Lions secured their first win over Maryland in 37 attempts, 13-10.

Mac O’Keefe and Jack Kelly led the way for the Penn State Offense, totaling four points each, while Gerard Arceri went 18-26 from the faceoff X to help fuel the top-ranked offense in the country.

Penn State got on the board first and snuck one past Dolan just under two minutes into the game, but Will Snider responded scoring his seventh goal of the season and knotting the score at one. Maryland then got in an early hole, allowing seven unanswered Penn State goals, the last coming with one second left on the clock.

Maryland’s comeback efforts proved to be nearly as strong as the Nittany Lion’s first quarter goal-streak, and the Terps responded with two unanswered goals of their own in the second quarter while holding Penn State scoreless to end the half.

Maryland would open the second half with four more unanswered goals, cutting the deficit to one after Roman Puglise scored his second goal of the night to make it 7-8 at 8:27 in the third quarter.

Penn State would respond under pressure, rattling off three straight goals to push their advantage back to four. The Terps would manage three of the final five goals on the evening, but it was not enough as the Nittany Lions hung on for the victory.

Maryland will return to action next Saturday, April 6 for their fourth straight home game when the Terrapins welcome Michigan to College Park.
