The makeover continues inside Jones-Hill House, where Mike Locksley has been working to remake the roster and finalize the coaching staff. The Terps have several new staff additions that haven't been announced. Here's the latest.

It sounds like much of Locksley's new staff is done, in addition to expected new defensive coordinator Ted Monachino.

It sounds like Hal Hunter will join the staff, likely as tight ends and co-offensive line coach. Hunter, 65, is a veteran coach who's worked at the college and NFL levels, including coach offensive lines for the San Diego Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, and Houston Texans. In college, he worked at William & Mary, Pittsburgh, Columbia, Vanderbilt, LSU, Indiana, and North Carolina. His most recent role was as the assistant offensive line coach for the Houston Texans. He replaces Kevin Sumlin, who wasn't retained as tight ends coach, and will help coach the offensive line alongside Damian Wroblewski, who became the lead coach at that unit when Brian Braswell was let go midway through last season.

It sounds like Louis Swaba will be the next running backs coach. While most of Locksley's new hires are older veterans, Swaba is a young, hungry guy getting his first big promotion. A North Carolina native who played offensive line at Appalachian State, he's been on the staff as senior quality control assistant but will now likely make the move to coaching on field and recruiting off campus. Recruits have mentioned him in interviews.

"Good ball coach. Lots of energy and knowledge," a source said.

That spot is opened because Latrell Scott, one of Maryland's top recruiters and the driving force behind one of Maryland's best Virginia hauls ever in the Terps 2025 recruiting class, is moving back to his natural spot as receivers coch. I'm also hearing James Thomas, who was replaced by Andrew Powell as special teams coordinator, is likely to move to safeties, with safeties coach Zac Spavital moving to outside linebackers. He last coached that unit at Texas Tech in 2018. Via his official bio on Maryland's site:

He helped transform Texas Tech into one of the nation's top turnover-causing teams in 2017. The Red Raiders ranked sixth nationally in forced turnovers (29), fourth in fumble recoveries (15) and eighth in defensive touchdowns (4). The defensive output helped Texas Tech lead the Big 2 and rank 13th nationally with a plus-11 turnover margin, the highest margin for the Red Raiders since 1997.

One of his linebackers Dakota Allen was a two-time All-Big 12 selection, earning First-Team honors in 2018 and Second Team in 2017. Allen recorded 73 tackles and recovering two fumbles in 2018 after leading Tech with 102 tackles and picking off a pair of passes. Another linebacker, Jordyn Brooks was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 after leading the Red Raiders in tackles for the second time in three years in 2018 (84). He became the first freshman to lead Texas Tech in tackles during the school's Big 12 era (86) in 2016.

Brooks garnered All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades and was named to the True Freshmen All-America Team by 247Sports.com in 2016 after finishing fifth among freshmen nationally in solo tackles per game (5.1). Tech forced 25 turnovers during Spavital's first season in 2015 as the Red Raiders went from a minus-13 in the turnover margin prior to his Spavital arrival to a plus-2 advantage.
As I reported earlier this week, sources said the defensive line will be coached by Corey Liguet, a former first-round draft pick who played for Illinois when Locksley was there. Liuget was with the program last season in a support role.
