COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland has earned an institutional Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 85 percent in figures released today by the National Collegiate Athletics Association. It marks the sixth time in the eleven-year history of the metric that Maryland has been above 80 percent.

Maryland's four-year Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) for student-athletes was reported at 69 percent, three percent higher than the overall NCAA Division I average of 66 percent.

The Graduation Success Rate is a four-year measure of freshmen and transfer student-athletes who entered the University of Maryland between the fall of 2005 and the spring of 2009. It does not penalize the institution for those student-athletes who transfer from Maryland in good academic standing, as the FGR does. In addition, the GSR includes student-athletes who transfer into the institution and receive athletics aid, unlike the FGR.

The Maryland men’s basketball program earned a GSR score of 91 percent, second highest in program history, and higher than the NCAA average of 74 percent. The football program posted a mark of 75 percent which is highest in program history and higher than the NCAA average of 72 percent. Women’s basketball posted a GSR score of 88 percent, two percent higher than the NCAA average or 86 percent.

Overall, Maryland’s GSR rate of 85 percent is two percent better than the NCAA average of 83 percent.

“We are very proud of the dedication and tireless work our student-athletes have demonstrated in the classroom,” director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. “We are committed to helping student-athletes build a foundation for a successful life after intercollegiate athletics.”

“We are constantly inspired by the commitment of our student-athletes in balancing the demands of being a major NCAA Division I college athlete and striving towards their ultimate goal of obtaining a college degree,” said Chris Uchacz, associate A.D. for academic services and career development. “Our mission is to provide student-athletes with both academic and athletic experiences which will help them develop sound leadership skills, the ability to collaborate with others, and the confidence to persevere through life’s challenges.”

In this most recent data, 17 teams at Maryland earned GSRs at or above 80 percent. Field hockey, gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball had perfect 100 percent GSR scores. In addition to field hockey, gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball, football (75), men’s lacrosse (85), women’s golf (89), softball (88) and women’s lacrosse (94) all improved their GSR score from the previous year.

The GSR and FGR are separate from the NCAA's Academic Performance Rates, which will be released in the spring 2016 semester.
