Maryland officially announces addition of Clemson grad transfer Shaq Smith

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland football coach Michael Locksley has announced linebacker Rahshaun “Shaq” Smith has joined the Terrapin football program.

Smith, a Baltimore native, earned his undergraduate degree from Clemson University in May and will be eligible to play immediately for the Terps.

A 6-foot-2, 250-pound linebacker, Smith led all players with seven tackles in Clemson’s spring game. He played in all 15 games during the Tigers’ undefeated 2018 season which ended with a National Championship. Smith finished the 2018 season with 17 tackles (9 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, and one sack.

Smith finished the 2017 season with 14 tackles and an interception over 13 games. A former five-star linebacker (according to Rivals), Smith redshirted the 2016 season.

Before enrolling at Clemson, Smith was the No. 1 prospect in the state of Maryland and the No. 6 overall player in the nation according to Rivals.com. He was also rated the No. 1 outside linebacker in the nation by ESPN, played in the Under Armour All-American game, and was tabbed a second-team USA Today All-American. Smith spent his senior year of high school at IMG (Fla.) Academy. He previously attended St. Frances Academy (2014) and Calvert Hall (2012-13).

Maryland opens its 2019 season on Saturday, August 31 at home against Howard.
