COLLEGE PARK, MD – Mady Traore, a 6-foot-11 forward from New Mexico State University, has officially joined the Maryland men’s basketball program as announced today. Traore originally hails from France, but moved to the United States early in his high school career.
“We’re excited to welcome Mady to our program,” said head coach Kevin Willard. “He is a very athletic player whose length will help us defensively, both on the wing and at the rim, while also having a versatile set of skills on the offensive side.”
Traore played this past season as a true freshman with the Aggies, not officially joining the program until January, where he appeared in seven games with one start before their season was ended early in February.
After growing up in Fresnes, France, Traore moved to Cumberland, Maryland, where he attended both the Bishop Walsh School and National Christian Academy in Washington, D.C. He then attended Believe Prep in Rock Hill, S.C., before beginning his collegiate career at NMSU.
Traore was heavily recruiting with offers from N.C. State, Arizona State, Florida, Kansas, Auburn, Oregon, and USC among others. He was a three-star recruit in the class of 2022 who was a Top 150 prospect, including the No. 6 overall in the state of Maryland, according to 247sports after coming to the United States from France.
The addition Traore brings Maryland's total newcomers to seven including the No. 15 recruiting class in the country made up of DeShawn Harris-Smith (Fairfax, VA), Jamie Kaiser (Burke, VA), Jahnathan Lamothe (Baltimore, MD), and Braden Pierce (Woodstock, GA). The Terps also recently announced the addition of transfers Jordan Geronimo (Newark, NJ) from Indiana and Chance Stephens (Riverside, CA) from Loyola Marymount.
