On Perry winning the job, says he has the grit and moxy they are looking for and he's a kid that will leave it all on the field for you. But they are stabilizing the position and building the plays around his skillset. But they are working on things and if he can do a better job of taking care of the ball they can win some games.
Says very rarely will you see them drop back and throw the ball deep down field. Says they have had some shot plays off of the run play and play action. But when they get behind the chains on 1st and 2nd down it's hurt them. But Perry needs to do a better job of seeing the safties and not holding on to the ball too long.
On Iowa's defense, they are really balanced and they will be looking to both run and pass the ball against them.
Says Iowa is very well coached. He's had a chacne to see them since his days at Illinois so he knows what they do pretty well. They line up and play hardnosed football. You need to stop the rush first with Iowa, but Beathard is a guy that can throw the ball, too. So need to stop him as well.
On the differences in Iowa between last year and this year, says the stability at QB has probably helped them and while the teams are different, they are playing well at all three phases of the game. And those are signs of a well coached team.
Says as a coach, five years in, there are no moral victories. But says he likes the way they played loose and played hard. Says against OSU, they played well for parts of the game, but against PSU, they played that way for 4 quarters and left it all on the field.
Says they have shown better football the past couple of weeks. Says they have shown some consistency defensively, but they need to keep getting better on offense. They are getting better, but now they need to take the next step and finish. Says they need to have their playmakers go out and make big plays and help them win these close games late.
Says they are getting better at being more equipped to run the ball more consistently against a big front like Iowa's.
Says making clutch plays aren't just on the offensive side of the ball. Says they had 11 plays where the defensive back was in position and didn't make the play against PSU. So again, the next step is to finish those plays. Says there is no doubt on both sides of the ball this team needs to make those clutch plays.
