A good day for us today as a team. Last opportunity for us to get inside the stadium and scrimmage before the season opener. We broke from the team hotel yesterday and guys are getting used to being back in their dorms and apartments.
Today's scrimmage was cut short due to lightning, but we still got a couple of good sessions in. Today was competitive between all three phases and we were able to get a lot of young guys work and I was excited with the way the guys performed.
Going into this week, we have refs at every practice and we've done a good job of limiting some of the penalties, but we did still have some of the same issues today with some young guys coming in and playing more. But we talk about the self inflicted wounds and talk to guys about being held accountable.
One spot on the O-line that doesn't have a clear returner. Mason Lunsford will be a starter for us at left guard. The one spot that really has been open in the right guard spot where Evan Gregory has been playing. Again, if Aric Harris can keep progressing, maybe we can slide Johari Branch back over to right guard and then we have some depth behind them with Glaze and Moran.
On the vocal leaders of the team, Sam O. is one of those guys that really jumps out to me. Mostly because he's not that vocal of a guy normally, but he's really stepped up in his super senior season which is good to see. Spencer Anderson is stepping up as a vocal leader of the offensive group.
Petrino is the returning starter at kicker and we've brought in some kids like the kid from Oregon to compete and add some depth behind him. And then we bring back a pair of experienced punters so happy with the progression of the kicking game from the spring to now in fall camp.
With the kickoff return game, Rakim Jarrett and Dontay Demus have both been taking kicks back. This is a new thing for Demus but Jarrett is comfortable back there. Jeshaun Jones is also taking back punts and he should be a weapon in the punt return game.
With us breaking camp as far as guys moving back into their normal housing, it's been different with other kids moving back to campus, which didn't happen last year. We are still in two-a-day mode. The biggest thing we are doing right now though, is really evaluating the personnel as we get ready to kickoff the season.
As far as COVID protocols, local gov't supersedes the Big Ten, but if someone tests positive, they would have to sit for 14 days as of right now. We now have to wear masks inside the building on campus, but other than that, nothing really new.
