First, I want to note that Maryland pulled out all the stops for Queen, including celebrating mom’s birthday with a cake. Also used messages from as many Baltimore Terps as possible. Again, Maryland really did an excellent job of pitching the hometown angle, and that hometown would be BALTIMORE, not the ‘DMV.’ But again, an excellent job by the staff to really make him feel like College Park is home.
All of that said, like it or not, today’s recruitments are very much about fit, getting guys to the next level and NIL. Especially five-star big men ranked in the top 20, as they are tough to come by.
After wrapping up his visit in Maryland on Sunday, Queen was back in Florida Monday and was paid a visit by Indiana head coach Mike Woodson. Again, the Hoosiers are pushing the ‘play with your five-star friend Liam McNeeley’ angle, while also having very competitive NIL package.
Maryland head coach Kevin Willard, along with lead recruiter David Cox are expected in Florida today to see Queen. A post-visit follow up and to likely also gauge what the competition is up to at the 11th hour. Again, still haven’t heard anything to make me think the Terps don’t lead in this recruitment and as I’ve also mentioned, they have allocated a large chunk of NIL for Queen as he is basically the ONLY priority at this point.
Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson is expected in Florida later this week to make a final pitch and at that point, a decision should come soon after. With it basically being the final week of October, and signing day just a couple of weeks away, a decision should come sometime in the next two weeks. My guess, just based on talking to a few sources, is that an announcement comes a day or two before signing day. That said, the hope for the Maryland staff is that he makes his decision even sooner. But again, we will know before the early signing day in a couple of weeks.
