COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior attackman Jay Carlson scored three goals on three shots to lead the No. 3 Maryland men's lacrosse team past No. 19 Loyola, 11-10, Wednesday night at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
Knotted at 10 goals apiece with less than four minutes to play, Terrapin junior Bryan Cole slotted home the game-winner after a sensational feed from teammate Joe LoCascio. The goals sealed the victory for Maryland (10-1, 2-0 B1G), as it ensured its 13th consecutive 10-win season - the longest current NCAA Division I streak.
Loyola (6-6, 4-2 Patriot) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Zach Herreweyers and Zach Sirico less than five minutes into the game, but the sophomore tandem of Matt Rambo and Colin Heacock teamed up for a pair of their own 1:28 apart to tie the game, 2-2.
Brian Sherlock briefly regained the lead for the Greyhounds, though Jay Carlson and LoCascio each answered for the Terps to give the home side a 4-3 advantage heading into the second quarter. LoCascio extended his team-leading point streak to 13 points.
The game swung back in favor of Loyola 63 seconds into the second quarter after strikes from Romar Dennis and Sirico. Carlson then tied the game, 5-5, after a beautiful feed from Matt Rambo, before Bobby Gribbin scored at the 11:17 mark to give Maryland the lead.
Loyola would answer to send the in-state rivals into the locker room all square, 6-6.
Carlson netted his third of the game less than a minute into the second half, however, the Greyhounds responded once again to tie the game, 7-7.
The Terrapin offense then opened things up with three straight goals in just over two minutes of play from LoCascio, Rambo and Gribbin.
The back and forth contest continued as Loyola put together a three-goal spurt of their own to tie the game at 10-10 with 5:45 remaining.
After Cole scored to give Maryland the lead, goalie Kyle Bernlohr stood tall to preserve the Maryland victory. Bernlohr finished the game with 10 saves.
The Terps have a short week before returning to action Saturday in Piscataway, N.J., against Rutgers at 6 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
