The last time the Terps and Badgers met, Maryland was a perfect 8-0, coming off of a win over Illinois and nationally ranked. They lost to the Badgers in Madison by a score of 64-59 and would go on to lose three straight in what has been their toughest four-game stretch of the season to-date. This time around, the Badgers enter Wednesday night's game having lost three of four and are expected to be without starting guard Max Klesmit for a second straight game, as he is still battling an upper body injury and did not travel to Maryland with the team.
Maryland is coming off of a tough road loss to No. 1 Purdue, but it could be argued it was one of Maryland's best performances of the season so far. Sophomore big man Julian Reese scored a team-high 19 points in the loss to the Boilermakers and has played some of the best basketball of his young career over the past couple of games. He'll be tested once again versus a Wisconsin frontline that features Badgers leading scorer Tyler Wahl and 7-footer Steven Crowl.
"It's huge. Especially when you go back to the last two games, what he's done against Hunter and Zach," head coach Kevin Willard said of the recent play of Reese. "To go face two of the elite centers, not only in this conference, but in college basketball, I think he won the Hunter battle, and even the other night, Zach had an unbelievable night, but I thought he had an unbelievable night, so I thought we won that possession, too. He's healthy, I think he's got a lot of confidence because he's been putting a lot of extra work in and I think our guys have a lot of confidence in him."
While the first Wisconsin game was the start of a three-game Big Ten road stretch, the Terps will face the Badgers Wednesday night for a blackout in the first of a three-game home stretch with a chance to climb the conference standings over the next week.
