I know someone asked me about this on the boards yesterday during the game. Didn't see it until late night and almost forgot about the scrimmage since there was a football game going on. Anyways, here are a few things I was able to gather from yesterday's scrimmage...
- The Terps won the scrimmage by around 15 points.
- Cowan did not start and played limited minutes coming off of his concussion.
- Ayala, Wiggins, Morsell, Lindo and Stix got the start.
- Stix was the man with a double-double of 20 pts, 10 boards a couple of blocks and a couple of assists. He also knocked down several threes.
- Donta Scott was the top performer among the frosh, going for 10 pts and 8 boards. I know myself and Pat harped on this all of last year and all summer, but Scott is a stud with a college-ready body, super versatile game and can really shoot the ball and rebound. Going to be extremely tough keeping him out of the lineup, I think.
- Wiggins was the No. 2 scorer with 16 points. His stroke is as smooth as ever from deep and he's now doing a better job of making shots coming off of screens. But...and this is something I've been looking for and I still haven't really seen with my own two eyes yet...he is still a bit passive when it comes to getting going downhill and attacking the basket. Still prefers the outside shot. Terps NEED Wiggins to become more aggressive attacking the hoop as a one-dimensional spot-up shooter is much easier to defend.
- With Ayala having shed that junk food weight, ditching the pregame Popeyes and Oreos, his game has really improved and he's able to play more above the rim and is just quicker, more explosive and it has helped him mentally, as well. Again, I think it is going to be very difficult to keep him out of the lineup this year. Like Wiggins, Ayala shoots the three at a high clip, but he's not shy about attacking the basket.
- I loved what I saw out of Lindo at the open practice we got to see last week, that said, his offensive game might not be as far along as I was hoping. Still needs to be a little more aware of doubles, finding open teammates in the post and making good, sound passes and he continues to work on his jump shot, but he doesn't look lost anymore and his defensive presence is there and will be huge for the team this year.
