He's coached 5 Big Ten games or so. Let's put the record aside for now because this team is overmatched in every game from a talent perspective and he had no hand in assembling the personnel. Instead, let's focus on things a coach can control. Fundamentals, attitude, hustle, energy, etc. Has anyone seen any real improvement in any of those four categories since he took over last month? I haven't. As a team, the players have basically given up. That's not to say that in a particular game or games, one or more players haven't performed well. However, when a player or players continue to make the same mistakes every game...apparently without any consequence...that's on the head coach. Coaches can control a number of things to get their players' attention. The biggest attention getter is playing time. Have we seen Danny Manning try to adjust minutes to drive home his message when game after game his team just walks through the motions? Tonight, Hart and Russell didn't start for apparently some off-the-court matter, not because of their deficient play. That doesn't win the players' respect. Rather, it sends a message that continued failure to get the message is tolerated. I don't care how Manning tries to put a positive spin on how the players have responded to him. They basically disrespect him each game by their behavior on the court. Unfortunately, he not only has demonstrated that he's not the solution to this fiasco, but by not throwing down the hammer and allowing this lackadaisical play to continue, he's unwittingly become part of the problem. I've seen enough.
