ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. and sophomore forward Jalen Smith have been named preseason All-Big Ten, as announced Wednesday morning by the conference.
Cowan, who is a two-time All-Big Ten selection, was one of three unanimous selections alongside Cassius Winston (Michigan State) and Kaleb Wesson (Ohio State).
Maryland and Michigan State were the only two programs in the conference with multiple selections.
Cowan enters his senior season with high expectations, having been ranked by Andy Katz of NCAA.com as the No. 9 overall player in the country. The Bowie, Md., native is one of four players in Maryland history with more than 1300 career points and 430 assists. Cowan has led the Terps in points, assists and minutes two straight seasons.
Smith also received praise from Katz, having been ranked the No. 18 overall player in the country. A Big Ten All-Freshman Team Selection last season, Smith is poised for a breakout sophomore season having put on 30 pounds since stepping foot on campus. The Baltimore, Md., native posted five double-doubles in 2018-19, which were third-most for a freshman in program history.
Cowan, Smith and the Terps officially open the season Nov. 5 against Holy Cross in College Park.
