COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- University of Maryland wide receivers Brian Cobbs and Jeshaun Jones were both selected for preseason watch lists on Thursday. Cobbs was added to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and Jones was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List.
Cobbs is one of 93 college football players recognized on the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, which is College Football's Premier Award for Community Service. The award goes to college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
One of the leaders of the Maryland football team, the senior wide receiver is heavily involved in the Terps community service efforts. He has served as a vocal leader for Maryland's social justice campaign and has worked with the Jordan McNair Foundation, the Best Buddies Friendship Walk and Lift for Life.
Cobbs is the first Terp to be named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List since Noah Barnes in 2019.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 2 and finalists will be announced on November 22. The formal announcement of the 2021 recipient will be made on December 9 and the presentation of the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy will occur in February 2022 in Fort Walton Beach.
Jones was recognized as one of the nation's most versatile players as he was named to the 2021 Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse.
The Hornung Award, now in its 12th season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend Paul Hornung. Fifty-seven student-athletes made the cut for this year's watch list.
Jones enters his junior season with 31 receptions for 452 yards and six receiving touchdowns as well as 182 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Last season, Jones totaled 11 receptions for 181 yards and one touchdown, with a three reception, 103 yard game in Maryland's win over Minnesota, including a 76-yard touchdown on a slant that Jones broke free in the first quarter.
The Fort Myers, Fla. native made history in his first game as a Terp back in 2018 vs. Texas, recording a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown on each of his first three touches to lead the Terps to a win and earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
The 2021 Watch List was compiled by a panel of college football experts based on a combination of 2020 statistics, career performance, SID recommendations and expectations heading into the 2021 season. In addition to the Watch List, the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll will recognize players whose performances during the regular season meet the Award's criteria. Players from both the Watch List and the Honor Roll will be eligible to win the Award.
Jones becomes the first Terp to make the Hornung Award Watch List since Javon Leake in 2019 and is one of eight players from the Big Ten on the watch list.
Cobbs, Jones and the Terps open their 2021 campaign on September 4 at home against West Virginia. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
