NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of Maryland defensive lineman Byron Cowart was selected by the New England Patriots in the 5th round (159th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday.
Cowart is the second Terp to be selected in this year's draft as Darnell Savage Jr. was drafted in the first round by the Green Bay Packers. With Cowart’s selection, Maryland has now had multiple players selected in the NFL Draft in four of the last five years.
Cowart, an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, led the Terps with 3.0 sacks and was tied for third on the squad with 5.0 tackles for loss in 2018. He started all 12 games and recorded interceptions against Rutgers and Michigan State. Cowart posted a career-high seven tackles at Iowa.
