On a lark I decided to go see how our old friends Seth and Chuck are doing in the ACC this year. I was mildly surprised to see that Seth is averaging almost 14 ppg and 3 assists and Chuck's basically averaging a double-double (10+ppg, 9+rpg).
I know Seth probably wouldn't have accepted a secondary role to Melo when he arrived but should he have had to? How about Melo and Seth on the floor at the same time? That would have been cool. Chuck's rebounding would have been a difference-maker this year and last year as well. I remember countless people here saying it was addition by subtraction, much like when 30+ players left the FB program. With those 2 guys still in the program we could still be in the top 5 right now.
Next year is another potential mass movement of players. If Turge goes 1 and done in both tourney's and Stone, Melo and Carter all go, can he survive it? He is potentially losing his under-achieving starting 5. Two years ago he filled the void quickly. He'll finally have a sufficient number of G's but who will provide the interior scoring presence? Bender, Dodd and/ or Ceko?
Brantley, likely to be the most experienced ballhandler on the squad was left to rot on the bench most of the year and will probably be asked/ told to take a backseat to an incoming frosh, with Dion and Huerter/Nickens filling out the wings. The only starter with significant college game experience in this doomsday scenario is Dodd and/ or Ceko and maybe Nickens (gulp). Dion has played but was used sparingly, much like Brantley, his freshman year before being injured this year.
Turge can't coach up a talent-laden team now. Does anyone believe he'll be successful with an inexperienced squad next year? I don't. I am excited about all the G's next year but what the hell will he do with them? The onus will be on them to carry the team. If only 1 guy stays I hope it's Stone, as it would take a load of pressure off of the G's. Carter really should stay also. Will be the most interesting off-season of the Turgeon era.
