I caught up with contacts today to ask about recruiting. Basically, I was just trying to see if any prospects were coming into town to watch practice. As of now, I'm under the impression that no one is set to be on campus this week, but as is always the case with the local prospects, guys could pop up one day. For example, I know Keith Simms is trying to check out a practice, so I'll be monitoring that. I wouldn't be surprised if he talks to one of the coaches in the next day or two, then decides to trek down to College Park later in the week.
However, the main thing I wanted to pass on is that I was told today that both freshman WR DJ Moore and OL Ellis McKennie have supposedly had a great first week. I was told that, out of all the freshman, those two have impressed the most.
Of course, with a few weeks to go, we'll see how things shape up, but right now, Moore is on pace to make the two-deep and thus likely won't be redshirted this season. Like all young lineman, McKennie will still likely redshirt, but if there are a few injuries to the interior offensive line, he could be someone to watch closely this season.
I was told that Ellis has done an excellent job at picking up the reads for both center and guard. Im under the impression that he's focusing on guard, but they have him learning some things at the center position. Im not sure how many reps - if any - he's received at center, but I know he's learning both positions during film sessions.
With Moore, he's already making it very clear that he's one of the best overall athletes in the squad. Im not sure where he stands right now on the two-deep, but again, I've been told that if he keeps this up throughout the next couple of weeks, there's a good chance he earns some playing time early in the season.
