Four-star PG Tyler Jackson starting strong this spring

The latest with Baltimore native and top-25 prospect Tyler Jackson, who helped Team Thrill dominate this past weekend on the UA circuit. Terps are in a solid spot here, helped out by the fact that they were able to land Queen. Jackson is a combo capable of playing both on and off the ball and is just a bucket getter. Maryland obviously heavily involved with his backcourt mate, Chance Mallory, as well. Landing one of these two in the next cycle would be huge and I'd say they have a very good shot at that happening.

Also worth mentioning here Jordan Scott of Virginia Elite, who they beat the other day. I'm hearing Scott is a done deal now to Michigan St. and will likely announce sooner than later. Izzo was in town, not only to visit him at school recently, but had dinner at Grandma's house. This should mean Sparty likely backs off of Cam Ward, while the Terps and G'town will now be going after Ward that much harder.

But Jackson is a big-time talent and big-time scorer and would be a huge get because you can pair him with just about anyone. More at the link below.

Annual, more or less, board name reveal

We do this every year at about this time, and I hope those of you who are new to the board will participate. For that matter, even veteran members can join in and, more or less, introduce themselves to the newer contributors.

I go back to the early 70s when new BB coach Lefty Driesell recruited the star player, Jim O'Brien, from my old high school, JEB Stuart in the Virginia suburbs of DC. The next year Lefty recruited McMillen and Elmore, and Maryland basketball became a big deal. Living in Atlanta in the 70s, I followed the Terps from afar until I realized I could pick up the evening broadcasts of WMAL from my home. Shortly afterward, my dear wife of almost 48 years remarked, "You're a Terp addict". It's been over 50 years now, and I guess Barbara (who did her graduate work at UNC) was right - a Terp addict I am.

As I remember it, my first entry on the board in the fall of 2001 was predicting Maryland would win the BB championship in 2002. I suspect my favorite BB win was clobbering Duke at College Park in 2002.

Terps officially add USF standout Selton Miguel

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Coming off a career-best season at South Florida, guard Selton Miguel has joined the Maryland men's basketball program as announced by head coach Kevin Willard today. Miguel, the cousin of former Terp standout and current Atlanta Hawk Bruno Fernando, was the American Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year and the league's Most Improved Player after averaging 14.7 points per game last season.

"Selton is a highly competitive player who can really impact the game on both sides of the court," said Willard. "He's another veteran player who can help us immediately and who has played in a lot of high-level games."

Miguel, a native of Angola, shot 39 percent beyond the arc last season for the Bulls and ranked second on the team in assists (71) and steals (38). In his two seasons with USF, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard averaged 12.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game after appearing in 61 contests. During the 2023-24 campaign, Miguel was also selected to the All-AAC Second Team.

Prior to his time in Tampa, he played two seasons at Kansas State where he saw action in 55 games averaging 7.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.

Overall, Miguel has scored 1,189 career points, including nearly 800 at USF in two seasons, and has played in 118 career games. He also has 393 career rebounds, 273 assists, and 104 steals.

Before college, Miguel was a Top 150 prospect from West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Florida, and was among the Top 30 small forwards nationally. After averaging 20.6 points as a senior, he finished with over 1,500 for his prep career.

Originally from Luanda, Angola, Miguel moved to Portugal at age 13 before coming to the United States in the ninth grade. He is fluent in four languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English) and has been a member of the Angolan National Team.

In addition to Miguel, the Terps have also previously announced the additions of transfer guards Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont) as well as the signing of freshmen center Derik Queen (Baltimore, Md.) and guard Malachi Palmer (Harrisburg, Pa.).

WBB: Terps sign All-B1G, All-A10 transfers

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland women’s basketball team head coach Brenda Frese signed All-Big Ten transfer Kaylene Smikle and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Sarah Te-Biasu this week.

Smikle, a native of Bay Shore, N.Y., earned All-Big Ten Second Team and All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors at Rutgers. Te-Biasu was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year after averaging 15.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists this season at VCU.
"The first thing I have to do is give huge thanks to so many people here at Maryland that helped put this group together,” Frese said. “My staff has worked tirelessly since before our season even ended. The transfer portal is relentless, from early in the morning until late at night, for weeks. There’s a lot of moving parts to the whole operation. It’s a true team effort. Our academic advisor deserves special mention as she’s had to look at everyone’s transcripts and find out how we’re going to make it all work. I also have to give a huge thanks to everyone who’s donated to our Maryland Collective. That support is invaluable to our program for now and the future."

  • A four-star recruit and the No. 11 ranked wing in the nation according to espnW and the No. 64 overall recruit in the country coming out of high school

Frese on Smikle: “Kaylene was someone we prioritized early on. We’ve seen firsthand what she can do in the Big Ten. As soon as she appeared in the portal, I reached out immediately. After talking to her and her family, I was even more excited to get them to Maryland. Families are a really important part of the equation for us. Kaylene will be a terrific fit. She is a tremendous scorer from outside and going to the hoop, she can play in transition and she’s terrific at getting steals. She is extremely competitive and driven. We’re really excited she’s a Terp.”

She can really score the ball and shoot it from three. She can create her own space to get her shot off. She’s very competitive and I’m excited to see what she can do with our players around her. We enjoyed getting to know Sarah, so it seemed like a great fit for all of us.”
