MLAX: Zappitello named Outstanding Player of the Year, one of three Terps named USILA All-America

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland senior close defenseman Ajax Zappitello headlined Maryland's three USILA All-America selections Thursday, garnering the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Outstanding Player of the Year award. Luke Wierman and Eric Spanos also earned All-American recognition.

Zappitello, also a First Team All-American selection, is the seventh Terp all-time to be named the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Outstanding Player of the Year, joining Doug Schreiber (1973), Frank Urso (1975), Brian Dougherty (1995), Matt Rambo (2017), Jared Bernhardt (2021) and Logan Wisnauskas (2022). Zappitello is the first non-offensive player to win the award since 2003 when Virginia goalie Tillman Johnson earned the honor. He is the first close defenseman to garner the recognition since 1993 (David Morrow, Princeton).

Graduate faceoff specialist Luke Wierman garnered Second Team recognition while junior midfielder Eric Spanos earned an Honorable Mention nod.

Zappitello was the lone unanimous First Team Selection by the USILA as well as Inside Lacrosse. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 PLL Draft is the leader of a terrific Terrapin defense. His 23 caused turnovers this season lead the team and his 31 groundballs rank second. The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year also has two goals on the season. His 71 career caused turnovers are 10th all-time.

Wierman has been a force at the faceoff X, winning 62 percent on the season, a number that ranks third in the nation. Wierman became the program's all-time leader in faceoffs won and groundballs this season. The All-Big Ten selection from West Chester, PA has also tallied nine points (four goals and five assists) to go along with 212 faceoff wins and 117 groundballs.

Spanos is in the midst of a breakout season for the Terps and currently has 34 points on 23 goals and 11 assists. He has scored four goals or more three separate times this season.

The seventh-seeded Terps will play in the NCAA semifinals against No. 6 Virginia on Saturday, May 25. The game is slated for a 2:30 pm start on ESPN2.

Hoops portal officially open for business...

The transfer portal is officially open for business today and things should start heating up quickly this week.

As far as those headed out, Noah Batchelor is officially in the portal this morning, officially opening up a spot for Willard to add a transfer.

On the Rodney Rice front, it does still seem like this is going to happen, but it is not yet a done deal and there are other schools trying to get him on board, also.

As for replacing Jahmir Young, I'm near certain Dug McDaniels will be available by the end of the day, the question is how much does Maryland want him and how hard to other programs go after him. He can score the ball, no doubt, but he does have some limitations with his size and defense. I also expect Harvard freshman Malik Mack to be available. The wildcard is Penn State's Ace Baldwin, the B1G DPOY who has one more year of eligibility.

At the wing forward spot, Tyrell Ward is a sniper who hit at a 40% clip in the SEC this season, having some of his biggest games down the stretch in wins over NCAA tourney teams. He's from the area and would immediately fill a huge void with his ability to connect from deep. One other name to possibly keep an eye on is Syracuse's Benny Williams, who officially went into the portal this morning. A former five-star from the area, there's no denying he has the physical tools and the talent, but he failed to put it all together at Syracuse. With that said, he still managed to average 7 points and 4 boards per game last season.

We are going to see a ton of big-time names pop up in the portal in the next 24-48 hours and then trickle in as teams are eliminated from the dance. This is quite possibly going to be the wildest ride (offseason) we've ever seen, so buckle up!

On Chaz Lanier...

As I suspected based on my social media sleuthing, Lanier is in talks with Kentucky and they are very much in the mix. David Sisk from the Kentucky site spoke with his mom last night and it sounds like Kentucky is right near the top of their list.

It is also worth noting, if 1st round is what they are shooting for, the fact he was not invited to the combine or the G League elite camp should all but assure he's coming back to school.

But while Maryland is involved in this one and I suspect is one of the few schools they know will be on his final list, all the chatter right now is this one becoming a Kentucky-Tennessee battle as things really start to heat up.

Here is what Davis posted last night:

I just spoke with his mom. She said they have spoken with Mark Pope several times, and were impressed with him. She said she could tell he is a very energetic individual. She said they were also impressed with him player development plan. They are going to be looking at things like that and need for next season.

Currently he is also in the NBA Draft. He has until May 29 to make the decision. Ms. Lanier stated that the goal is to go in the first round, but they are working "simultaneously" between the draft and looking at schools. Reading between the lines I think going to a place that could help him prepare for the draft next year will be big. She said they are working on a list, and are doing their homework, but are not doing it on everybody who has contacted. I believe they know a few of the schools that will be on it, and I do think there is some excitement there about Kentucky. We did not discuss any other schools.
