Official release on Under Armour

COLLEGE PARK, MD, June 17, 2024 – After two decades of partnership, the University of Maryland has renewed its partnership with Under Armour, extending its agreement for an additional 12 years through 2036. The continuation of this partnership reinforces the pair’s commitment to championing all athletes, reaffirms Maryland’s significance to Under Armour’s heritage, and demonstrates the desire to bring this partnership into the next chapter of the brand’s story.

Maryland has been a revolutionary partner with Under Armour since the company’s beginning, with its founder and CEO Kevin Plank having served as the University’s football special team’s captain before graduating in 1996. Over the years, Maryland student-athletes have been featured front and center by the brand sporting eye-catching, innovative uniforms across all their teams. Since first donning Under Armour apparel in the early 2000s, Maryland has won 19 National Championships in six different sports and more than 100 conference championships. The Terps have been one of the top programs in the Big Ten since joining the conference in 2014, winning 49 conference championships and being third-most among all Big Ten schools over the last ten years – all while proudly wearing Under Armour.

“The University of Maryland holds a special place in my heart because it’s where our brand was born. We’re excited about the next chapter of this partnership which will entail working closely with Maryland’s elite athletes and tapping further into the entrepreneurship and innovation hub that exists right in our own backyard. I commit that myself and Under Armour will do everything we can to give the Terps, and frankly every school we outfit, an advantage with the innovative product we build to help them win,” said Kevin Plank, Founder and CEO of Under Armour.

Under Armour began outfitting Maryland’s football program in 2004, marking them as the first collegiate football team in the country to wear UA jerseys. UA has been the department-wide exclusive outfitter since 2009 and will continue to design and supply the training and game-day footwear, apparel, and equipment for Maryland’s varsity athletic teams. The new agreement also extends the partnership to the University beyond the walls of the athletics department, providing Under Armour products to outfit club and intramural teams within the University’s Department of Recreation and Wellness. Supporting and celebrating student-athletes is core to both UA and Maryland, and the partnership renewal is designed to help more athletes unleash their full potential and perform at their best.

In addition to outfitting the Terrapin student-athletes, the comprehensive partnership includes integration into the brand’s marketing, social media, in-store, and grassroots activations. The two will share a marketing commitment, and both organizations will collaborate to champion the student-athletes' success on and off the field.

“Maryland and Under Armour are perfect partners, connecting founder Kevin Plank with his alma mater,” said Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics at University of Maryland. “We are excited that this rich tradition will continue for the next 12 years in a strong partnership with Under Armour. Our Terps proudly wear Under Armour, and this agreement showcases UA’s unwavering commitment to the University of Maryland, our supporters, and our fans.”

The extended partnership features new elements, including an NIL Brand Ambassador Program, allowing Maryland student-athletes to earn direct compensation from Under Armour for promoting Under Armour products on the student-athlete’s social media channels.
Over the next 12 years, Under Armour is committed to using the latest product innovations to improve athletes. Customized gear will be designed to meet the needs of student-athletes while also providing exclusive gear for all Maryland fans.

Jim Beardmore obituary from the Baltimore Sun

loved Jim's Comment when KIrk Thurston asked him where his chest protector was.

I’m like, ‘Dude, you forgot your chest protector.’ He looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘Fuzzy [Thurston’s nickname], I’m a goalie. I need to stop it with my stick. If I can’t stop it with the stick, I shouldn’t be in the goal,’” Mr. Thurston said. “I’ll never forget that.”

New Under Armour deal….

So as I mentioned in the other thread, the deal is set to become official and officially announced soon. The deal is also expected to be roughly 100 million (98 million to be exact). But the new deal will be for 12 years instead of 10 like the current deal that was done in 2014.

So that comes out to just under 8.2 million per year, a significant bump from the previous deal but slightly less than the 10yr/100mil Notre Dame is getting. Still, I would say this is a very good deal and in-line with peer schools.

And it goes without saying, Plank has been EXTREMELY generous to the school over the years so this deal was pretty much a no brainer.

2025 five-star hoops countdown

From Rod Cassidy, a countdown of the 2025 five-star hoops prospects. Two to watch from this group, one is listed in the story and one is not.

Mikel Brown Jr. is a top Terps target at point guard, although not listed in the story.

Maryland is also involved with five-star wing forward Bryson Tiller. Both play for Overtime Elite.

Interesting head coach..and an interesting read he is mentioned in

Terps land commitment from son of former FSU and Oregon head coach

Maryland has landed their first commitment of the weekend from Calvert Hall TE JT Taggart, the son of former FSU and Oregon head coach Willie Taggart. As I mentioned in the preview piece yesterday, a lot of strong ties with Taggart and the Terps staff and he's got a nice big frame to work with. I'm guessing this won't be the last commitment of the weekend, either.

RIP Jim Beardmore

Just learned this afternoon that Jim Beardmore, former Terps lacrosse All-American goalie and son of HOF coach Bud Beardmore, has passed away. Jim was a pretty damn good coach himself, having led Severna Park High School to a couple of state titles and he also coached in the MLL. Gone way too soon. Condolences to the family. RIP

New hoops target

The Terps have a new hoops target on the radar. They have had preliminary talks with former Wake Forest wing Damari Monsanto.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pounder is originally from South Florida and began his college career at East Tennessee State. He had a breakout season a couple of years ago, averaging 13.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and a steal per game. He also shot 40.5% from three with 87 makes! He did all that in just 27 games.

The problem is that he tore his patella tendon towards the end of the season and wasn't fully recovered until the end of this past season, when he played in just 11 games. Still, even playing just spot minutes, he was 17-49 from beyond the arc. If he can come back fully healthy and healed for his 6th year, he could possibly be a major contributor. During the 22-23 season, he scored 28 points at Notre Dame on 8-13 shooting from beyond the arc. He had 25 points on 7-15 shooting from deep versus UVA and 22 points on 6-12 shooting from deep at Rutgers. In all, he had seven games of 20-or-more points.

The connection here is his agent, who also represents Isaiah Whitehead, the former Seton Hall All-American that was recruited by and played for Willard. He also happens to have played AAU ball for Team Breakdown, an Under Armour sponsored team based out of South Florida, and was teammates with Selton Miguel (as well as Jamal Mashburn Jr. and current NBA forward Kai Jones).

While it has been pretty quiet for a while, this one feels like it has some traction and he's be a really good get at this point in the offseason.

And for those wondering, he'd be a 6th-year senior. Redshirted as a true frosh, played during COVID season, played three additional seasons and still has one left since COVID season does not count and he redshirted the year before.

On Jayden Shipps...

I'm literally in the middle of putting this in a story I'm about to post, but figured I'd make a post about it now.

Was just told that NC State staff told Shipps not to bother coming down this weekend and he will NOT be taking an official visit there. Their staff has resigned to the belief he's a Terp. Kid is still telling people he might still take another visit, but I'd expect this one to be done sooner than later.

But that's some good news as the second wave of visitors get started.
