Maryland announces four-game series with Georgetown

COLLEGE PARK, MD – For the first time in nearly a decade, Maryland and Georgetown will meet on the hardwood as both teams have announced today a four-game series starting with the 2025-26 season.

The two programs will open the series next season (Fall 2025) at the XFINITY Center before then playing at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, during the 2026-27 campaign. In 2027-28, the Terps will again host, while the Hoyas will host in 2028-29.

All-time, Maryland is 38-27 against Georgetown. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 15, 2016. From 1935-1980, the teams met at least once annually with the exception of a three-year pause due to World War II. The series dates back to the first game on Feb. 15, 1911 – a 31-25 win for Georgetown.

The teams have twice played in the NCAA Tournament. The first was in 1980 in Philadelphia and the second was in 2001 in Anaheim, California, during the Terps’ run to their first Final Four appearance.

Perhaps one of the most iconic meetings came in 1993 – the only time the two teams played between 1980 and 2001 – where Maryland upset No. 15 Georgetown 84-83 in overtime at USAir Arena in Landover. Joe Smith scored 26 points and Duane Simpkins hit the game-winner in overtime. That sparked a run during the season that saw the Terps ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 1985-86 and a trip to the Sweet 16. It also marked the first of 11 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament for Maryland.

Season tickets for the 2024-25 season are now on sale starting at $199. Maryland Young Alumni (those who graduated within the last five years) receive a 48 percent discount on season tickets, while current Maryland Parents who have a student enrolled for the year are eligible for a 20 percent discount on two season tickets.

The Terps' returning players are highlighted by rising senior Julian Reese, rising sophomore DeShawn Harris-Smith, and fifth-year senior Jordan Geronimo. Maryland has one of the top incoming transfer classes in the Big Ten: Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont), Selton Miguel (South Florida), Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Tafara Gapare (Georgia Tech). Additionally, the Terps signed five-star McDonald's All-American Derik Queen (Baltimore) and four-star guard Malachi Palmer (Harrisburg, Pa.).

The non-conference slate for the 2024-25 season will officially open on Monday, Nov. 4 against Manhattan at the XFINITY Center. Tip-off times and television assignments, as well as dates for Big Ten games, will be announced at a later time. All games will air on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with legendary Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche and Walt Williams.

Men's Lacrosse .... Some Thoughts

I know that not everyone is happy with the way the season ended, but looking back this team was lucky it made the tournament in the first place.

The Terps started the season 5-1, but it was a very deceptive 5 wins because of the fact that 3 of those wins were in overtime. That was followed by 2 loses which made their record 5-3. At this point, if the overtime had gone differently, they could have been 2-6 and we would have had reason to cry.

What went wrong?

1. Dante Trader decides not to play. In reality, this was a big setback. On the field Dante was a presence, no team was able to push him around, and midway in 2023 he seemed to be getting back his offensive game. Remember that he was a 2nd team All American.

2. Injuries. Players such as McNaney, Malever and Coffman were coming off down time and never seemed to get their A game back. Additionally, Owen Murphy was constantly nicked and never seemed to be 100%.

3. Offensive Coordinators. We had had 3 new coordinators in the last 3 years in Benson, Bernhardt and Phipps. Here's hoping Coach Phipps stays for a while so the attacking unit can see some continuity. Coach Phipps is also reportedly an excellent recruiter.

4. We have to develop more dodgers on attack, so that teams cannot lock down on Erksta. I am hoping incoming freshman Spencer Ford, John Gardiner and John Draley provide some help here.

5. Note to Coach Tillman please use the freshman

6. Note to Damon Evans. With the influx of BIG10 TV contract and Under Armour contract please build a dedicated stadium for men's soccer and lacrosse. This would provide a real home court advantage, something lacrosse does not have playing in a football venue.

7. In regard to the transfer portal and the 7 players coming in, the only one I personally have high hopes for is A.J. Hernandez a defenseman from Navy. You cannot go wrong with a Boys Latin player.

Finally, the 2 grandsons and I have started our summer your. We went to Maryland and the Naval Academy last week. Next week we will look at Penn, Drexel and Lehigh. And finally, before summer is over, we will hit Cornell, RIT and maybe Yale.

Notice there is no Carolina stop. Not a big fan of either coach, especially UNC.

Boys have also been invited to a 4 star camp, but our road trips may stop them from attending.

WOW...THE BAR IS low

Bowers started in 11 games over his career as a Terp where he averaged two points in just over two minutes per game, while he played in all but one game his sophomore season.

At Archbishop Spalding High School: Starting center for Archbishop Spalding in Severn, Md. ... averaged 13.5 points per game as a senior to go along with 6.0 rebounds per game ... blocked 76 shots and dealt 40 assists as a senior ... shot 52.8 percent from the floor his final season, helping the Cavaliers to a 26-7 record and a second-place finish in the Baltimore Catholic League and the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference ... named to the Baltimore Sun's All-Metro first team in his senior season after being selected to the second team as a junior.

Sounds like every player named first team should be in the BCL HOF

Lacrosse ... transfer portal

sorry to see him go. When I first saw him play as a freshman, I thought he might have a chance of wearing the #1 jersey.

Rory's endearing moment

It was in the DC area (at Congressional, as I remember, perhaps at the US Open) that Rory stopped to exchange "low fives" with a youngster in the gallery. Turns out the little boy was the son of a participant at this Terp site, and I've always been partial to Rory. I think the photo was in the Wash. Post and may have been presented here by the honorable ETU. It was a nice gesture by the big-time golfer, and a moment I fondly remember.

Terps land top local RB Iverson Howard

The Terps have landed a commitment from local three-star RB Iverson ‘Rocket’ Howard. He chose the Terps over finalists FSU and Michigan and a host of other big-time programs. With Howard as well as DeMatha two-sport star Bud Coombs, the Terps have a really solid pair of backs for the future.

This could be the start of a big week for the Terps who will host a number of important official visitors this week, including Rivals250 QB Malik Washington.

Howard will take his official visit to Maryland this month.

Commitment incoming?

It sounds like the Terps are going to get a commitment from local three-star running back Iverson Howard of Quince Orchard when he announces today at noon. This one looked like it was possibly trending away from Maryland for some time but at the end of the day, it looks like they will get it done and he will take an official visit to Maryland this upcoming weekend.
