TBT: Looking back at Maryland and Wisconsin starters as recruits

It is Throwback Thursday once again, and today we compare the Terps starters to their Badgers counterparts. A couple of notes on this one, I listed safety Hunter Wohler as a starter, but he is coming off of a leg injury that forced him to miss the past 7 games. It is possible he doesn't start this week but he is expected to play. Also, former four-star LB Nick Herbig missed the Badgers' last game and could sit this one out, also. That said, he is not listed as OUT and they will very likely need him in what could be a tight ball game. Finally, corner Alexander Smith will likely start his second straight game after replacing Ricardo Hallman who was benched for poor play. That secondary is banged up and weak. Terps need to take advantage.

Just get rid of the NCAA already

If this is what passes for enforcement, tell me what is the point of having an organization that does nothing but suck money away from the colleges that piut the athletic product on the field.

Adam Friedman lists St. Frances USC commit Sam Greene as a potential flip candidate for the Terps. Greene was at Maryland's most recent game versus Northwestern and they have a real chance of pulling this one off. The Terps are also involved with a four-star safety out of Philly and the latest on some local 2024 QBs. More at the link.

Tagovailoa selected to Davey O'Brien Class of 2022

FORT WORTH, TX -- Maryland football quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has been selected to the Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2022, it was announced Tuesday. Tagovailoa is one of 40 quarterbacks that are now an official candidate to win the 2022 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
Tagovailoa currently stands fourth in the nation with a 72.5 completion percentage, and also ranks in the top-25 in completions per game (24.4) and passing yards per game (285.9). His 69.1 career completion percentage is currently fourth among all active FBS quarterbacks, and he also stands top-20 among all FBS quarterbacks in career passing yards per game (240.4), completions per game (20.1) and passing efficiency (151.4).

The redshirt junior has skyrocketed up the Maryland record books, now standing second all-time in Maryland history in completions (574), passing yards (6,872) and touchdowns (46). Tagovailoa only stands 77 completions, 430 yards and four touchdowns from setting the program passing records in those categories. With a 300-yard game against Purdue (315 yards), Tagovailoa now stands alone at the top of the all-time 300-yard game ranks in Terrapin history with 11. He also is first all-time in career completion percentage (69.2) and passing efficiency (151.4).

This season, Tagovailoa has completed 171-of-236 passes for 2,001 yards and 13 touchdowns while leading the Terps to a 6-2 record and the earliest they've reached bowl eligibility since 2010. Tagovailoa has thrown a touchdown in 22-of-24 career games as a Terp and six-of-seven games he has played this season.

The next step in the process will be to select the award's 16 semifinalists from the 40 quarterbacks. The semifinalists will be chosen based on voting from the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee as well as bonus ballots awarded from the first round of the Davey O'Brien Fan Vote.

For the third straight year, the Fan Vote will take place on the award's three social media platforms—Instagram, Twitter and Facebook—and the top five vote getters on each will receive bonus committee member ballots which will be added to the votes cast by the National Selection Committee.

To participate in the Fan Vote, fans must like the original Davey O'Brien Award post highlighting their quarterback. The first round is open now until Friday, Nov. 11 at noon (CT). The 16 semifinalists will be named on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Looking ahead, the three finalists will be tabbed on Tuesday, Nov. 29, while the winner will be announced live on Thursday, Dec. 8 on The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The Davey O'Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O'Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.2 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O'Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.

MSOC: Maryland clinches Big Ten championship

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Maryland captured the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Championship today with a 1-1 draw against Indiana in Bloomington, Ind.

The No. 8 Terrapins (10-2-4) finished the season with a 5-0-3 record in conference play. The title marks Maryland’s third since joining the Big Ten Conference in 2014 and its first since 2016.

The Terrapins fell behind today in the 25th minute, as Indiana’s Ryan Wittenbrink’s right-footed shot found the back of the net. The visitor trailed until the final minutes of the match, when Maryland’s Joshua Bolma found Stefan Copetti in the 87th minute to level the score at 1-1.

By virtue of today’s result, the Terrapins also secure the top seed in the upcoming Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament, slated to begin next weekend.

The tournament kicks off Friday, Nov. 4, with four quarterfinal matches at the top four seeds. The winners of those matches will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 9, to be hosted by the two highest remaining seeds following the quarterfinals. The championship match will then be played on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the highest remaining seed.

Both semifinals and the championship match will be televised live on the Big Ten Network and can be streamed via the web, smartphones, tablets and connected devices through FOX Sports Go and the FOX Sports App. The four quarterfinals will be streamed live on BTN's digital subscription service, B1G+.

The full Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament bracket will be released later this evening.

D J Moore just made a boneheaded play

With under 30 seconds remaining and Atlanta ahead 34-28, inexplicably Moore was allowed to get behind the Falcons defense and caught a touchdown pass to tie the game. However, in celebration he took off his helmet and threw it to the ground. In the NFL, that triggers an unsportsmanlike penalty. The Falcons chose to accept the penalty on the ensuing extra point attempt. So, instead of a chip shot to win the game 35-34, Carolina was pushed back to the 30 yard line and the extra point attempt was from the 48. Their kicker missed which has sent the game into overtime.
